NEW...Questions about TM 808

Jerdog

New member
I am thinking about acquiring a deep seeking detector for cache hunting. I think I want to find a used Whites TM 808 with the cave locating option. What would be a fair price to pay? Anyone used this model? Pros and Cons.
I will be using it in an agricultural area to search old homesteads. any pointers. How deep will it search in a low mineralization soil? How small an item will it detect?
Any other information; including whether I need it if I already have an MXT with the full spectrum of coil sizes' would be appreciated.

The similar looking TF 900 by Discovery is a better bet than the 800 Whites. I assume the 808 is a catch up to match the Discovery features.

All can be picked up second hand in excellent condition for about half the new price but they are like buses. None around then a couple will arrive at the same time.

They are not designed for small items which is an advantage as you can avoid small rubbish. You would locate a large buckle say 2x2 plus at normal detector depths but not a smaller one.
Depth is not great unless the item is very large. I would think that even on low mineralised sites with a fairly large target you would not get more than four feet. The ground reject of both models gives an advantage over the Fisher Gemini.
The Discovery (and the Whites is the same basic circuit) is a 12.5 khz VLF for cache hunting with a cable/pipe tracing 70 odd khz TR mode that you would use for cave/void hunting.

You will still need an MXT or similar for individual coins but as you mention cave location then you have to look at either two box or the very expensive mainly German specialist machines.
