New owner-XLT at the beach?

I just picked up a used XLT(got alot to learn). I'm headed to the beach for a week (north florida), and I was wondering if anyone would recommend the best settings for me?

Chuck

Start with the pre sets first. and learn the detector,
Also go to the XLT forum for more help.
Read and reread books on the XLT.
The more you use it the better you will get.
Your XLT will serve you well.

As an XLT user, I can say the machine performs well in sand, wet or dry. If I'm hunting in wet sand, I use the factory beach program. If I'm hunting in dry sand, I'll sometimes use the beach program, but oftentimes will use the coin/jewelry mode. I have some great custom programs, but more often than not, I hunt with the factory settings.

Use the beach program and make an adjustment to the sens, it presets at around 75%, turn it upto 80% or a little more for dry sand, and turn it down to 65-70% for wet sand. Once you've done that, turn up the preamp gain one number at a time, re-balance and check stability, once you start to "chatter" back down one number and re-balance.

Be prepared to DIG DEEP. (also note, this will cause a "false" signal where there is a high deposit of salt. that is where the waves stopped before going back down, but it should work really well in the overall wet or dry sand, just not on "the line". The false will be a beep in one direction, not "repeatable" multiple times, as you machine adjusts with the auto tracking. The false will ring in high, close to a quarter reading) Sweep speed should be medium in dry sand and slow in wet sand.

You will find alot more stuff in the dry sand, but more valuable stuff in the wet sand. Go from 1.5 hours before low tide to 1.5 hours after low tide to hit the wet sand and work the dry sand during high tide hours.

good luck

I got back today. I learned a good bit about the readings for beer tabs and bottle caps ;) I did have a small problem that I need advice on... I had trouble getting the XLT to ground balance in dry sand. It didn't' seem to matter which preset program I used. Any ideas??? Do I need to send it in for a checkup?

thanks Chuck

Huh? sure there wasn't a treasure chest below the coil? GB over dry sand shouldn't be a problem, unless you were directly over the high tide line.

I would do a little more checking into before I sent it off. Try at an area lake, tot lot and few other places and I would try one more time over a salt water beach, well above the tide, one more time.

So did you get any keepers?

All I came away with was some pocket change and all the tabs.

I emailed White's after I posted my question here. He guy said it was normal due to lack of minerals in the sand. Does that sound right?
