New MXT User - Need Help

John LA

New member
I recently purchased this MXT used. It looks new no scratches and everything seems to work except pushing toggle switch forward don't eliminate pull tabs. Switch doesn't seem to do anything in the forward position. What am I doing wrong?

It eliminates the old style pull tabs, not the new style. The new style show up at between 22-24 if they are not bend or damaged. Nickels will show up between 18-20. This is under normal conditions.
Hope this helps.

I am new to this but I believe that it doesn't eliminate all pull tabs when the switch is forward because nickels are approximately the same size and conductivity(especially newer tabs). Most people want nickels. My MXT sometimes picks up pull tabs as nickels but the confidence bar is usually half or less. More than likely your machine is in good shape. To test the switch switch, turn it to relic mode and put the switch forward to the coil (putting it in two tone mode) low for iron and high for non iron pieces. then run a coin under the coil and you should hear a high tone telling you it is something other then iron. then do the same thing with iron only to hear a low tone if the machine is functioning correctly. If you are successful the switch is probably in proper working condition. I may be wrong, In which case I would hope that one of the veterans could correct me and better inform you:huh:. I'm just speaking from my experiences. Enjoy this highly addictive hobby, and keep working with your machine and you will begin to understand it better. once you get the hang of it I think you would be hard pressed to find a better machine for the price. Good luck!!!!

When the trigger is in the forward position, this allows pull-tabs (old style) to be rejected in the VDI of 28 to 49, while still accepting U.S. Nickels (VDI 18 to 20).

Hey Oak,

Just to be clear though - running the switch in forward position notches out all targets in that VDI 28 to 49 range (not just pull tabs) correct?

Thx

Yes it's just taking out a block of VDI's. Rob

I noticed that too with mine and it is three years old. I suspect it does edit out some pull tabs but not all of them.
I have colled a buch of different tabs and experimented with them. Some of them don't register when toggle switch is forward, bt others do.
I have NO idea why that is.

Good luck.

I would recommend buying the following book:

Taking a Closer Look at Metal Detector Discrimination
by Robert C. Brockett

While some of the detectors mentioned in the book are now old, the material of the book still applies. It retails for $8.95 at White's Electronics.
If you need additional info, please let me know.

I never rely on that for if you're wanting to "not dig pull tabs", you will eliminate gold rings too. I've tested my MXT with several gold rings and if the toggle switch is forward, it doesn't give a signal that I would normally not dig. I use the relic mode 95% of the time. Good luck and just keep playing with your machine. Soon you will know it like the back of your hand. Soon you will TRUST your machine and what it's telling you.

Yep, some pull tabs, but not every variation.
Bill

It gets rid of some of them but not all of them.
How are you doing with your machine now. Finding anything?

With the trigger forward you will also knock out a lot of older Indian Heads (VDI ranges 36-65 most falling between 36-42 and from 48-56) :stars: And like others have said you might be missing some gold rings or jewelry.

Take Care & HH :)
