Welcome dave51. I've had my mxt since Dec. and am learning. You've come to the right place for an education as there is a wealth of knowledge. You will hear references to the book " The MXT EDGE" and I agree with the other folk that it is a must have. I ordered mine from Amazon. The mxt is amazing . Remember to use the search function for gathering facts. If you have a question, most likely it has been asked and answered before. I wish you well. Don

MXT edge is a good read, it will help you to understand the mxt and VLF detectors in general

I have found do a good ground balance and put it in lock this should make it more stable set threshold to a light hum if you hear it get a little louder going over a target and no VDI I would dig it you will be surprised what you will find this raise in tone should be repeatable both directions if only one it is most likely junk but a good ground balance is vary important and dig all the hi tones
