New MXT owner question

New member
I recently bought a new MXT from KellyCo. I also bought the 5" excellerator coil with it, but I don't see any posts "bragging" about that one. Did I make a mistake? Should I have purchased a different coil as a second for trashy areas. I have't used it yet - still in the box. Thanks for any help.

There is nothing wrong with this coil. It a very small coil and does a great job in the trashiest areas. I have this coil and it works well. Being a small coil it doesn't cover much area and therefore takes a long time to cover an area. You don't hear much about it probably because most of the new guys getting a small coil are probably going to the 6" coil. Rob

All the reviews I've read about the 5" EXcelerator say its a very good little coil for trashy areas. Like Rob said it's just small, but that can come in handy when detecting around objects in a tot lot or prospecting around rocks. I have the 4.5 X 7 EXcelerator and I really like using it.

But i hear the 5'' ex coil is hot it will find you a lot of stuff.Other forum people have said it is good.I had a coil close to that size so i moved up one to the 6''.It is real good now I'm using 10''ex dd and it is good .Don't know which one i like better.

Don't have that one, but do have Whites 4X6 and the 5.3. They're great in trashy areas and I would think the one you have should be too.

Nothing wrong at all. It's a great little coil for trashy areas as others have stated. You will have to go slow with such a small coil, but that's not a downfall. Going slow gets the targets! Plus it also puts you in "relaxation" mode. ;) The choices of coils depends on what type of hunting you're doing and ones own preference. HH to all, Nancy

Say Dreamdigger,

You did good getting that small coil. I use one just about every day during my hunts. It's like taking your car for a detailed cleaning. You can assure that that small coil will be detailing all the targets in the ground where you are searching. I personally love using this piece of my equipment. Just have fun using each piece of your MXT equipment
and luck be with you each day.

Thanks to all of you for the pep talk. I feel better instead of stupid for ordering something I knew absolutely nothing about. I just asked the guy at KellyCo if this would be a good 2nd coil and he said sure. Kinda wish I had sprung for the 6", but this is what I've got. Good luck to all of you.

I have the 6''ex but also have the whites mini 4x6 and the ex coil does better for separation and depth and the sound of buried object such as aluminum foil and kind of bangs on rings and nickels.Such as if a ring is no.50 or 47 and trigger forward in coin mode if it is a good target it will come through on the swing if you walk around it.My whites wont and the ex make you dig targets that are good objects by the sound were as to me i passed up these with the whites mini 4x6 the ex lock's on better for me in my area. You made a good choice just go out and get use to it.And post items you find with it.So i have some pics to look at. thanks hope this helped.

The 5'' Accelerator coil is an excellent coil. It is very good in the high trashy areas. We do however sell more of the 4.5x7'' accelerator coils because they will get you a bit more depth. Since the price wise its only a little bit more, If you want the 4.5x7'' instead, just give me a call and I will be happy to exchange it for you.

Thanks, Tony. I may give you a call. I still know that I don't know my detector. I keep getting a strong signal with a VDI of 70 or so. Zero inches, but I find nothing, even thought the detector says 1cent or 5 cents. I have found a few whole aluminum cans with a similar signal, but they are about 6 to 7 inches. That whole area was a yard, but the detector said "hot rocks".

A depth indication of zero is the first clue that you have a big target under the coil, usually deep. A shallow large target will give you an overload, (usually). The depth indicator is calibrated for coin sized objects and a larger than a coin sized target will read shallower as a smaller than a coin sized target will read deeper than it really is.

If you listen to the sound that a coin under the coil makes, you will soon learn that cans and other trashy targets sounds differently. It is all part of the learning process and the more you hunt, the smarter you get.

Good luck with your new toy and most important...............have fun.

yes, most definitely spend time with it. There is no substitute for knowing your machine well. You will get the hang of it soon. Call me if you ever need any help.
