New MXT Owner, looking for tips

rodgar

New member
Hi To all, I'm new in this forum and new with the MXT, I been detecting for almost a year, I'm looking for some in field tips for the MXT, like how to check if the ground balance is OK, I also have a question, the other day (using my detector for 2 time) I get a good signal +42-44 I hit the P/P, its said 4" so I dig, at 6" nothing I check again still in the hole so I keep digging at 9" I found a piece of iron 3" x 2" I take it out and check the hole again and no signal  , so what could it be? all this was in the coin jewelry mode, disc at 3-4 gain at Preset trac Lock.

Will appreciate any help

Luck

This may not work if the hole was to small for the coil but the closer you got to the iron the lower the vdi number should drop a sure sign it is iron. If the numbers rose the item would be non-ferrous. It is easier with a sunray probe in the typical small hole. That is a tip I got from a guy that used the method successfully in Ganes Creek Alaska. The MXT Edge is great reading for MXT owners.

Hi Rodgar,

Go to Chris Ralph

Jeff Fosters book, The MXT Edge explains it perfectly. You can purchase it on-line at fielddepth.com. I have been using my MXT 4 years and it has been a great asset to me. It not only tells you why it does what it does but also how it does it. It has answered every question I had about the MXT and it has answered many questions I never even thought about. No, I don't get a cut for advertising. The book is just that good!

To answer your question. Keeping in mind your detectors depth calibration for coin size targets. Thats why a larger than coin size target reads shallower than it really is. Again this is a short answer, the whole and better explanation is in the book.

I just order the MXT Edge book, everyone said is good so I order it. I will have to read it like 2 or 3 times because my English is not that good.

Thanks for everything

When running my sensitivity 10 or plus some targets surface to 4 inches. i kind of miss when i dig thinking i was centered over target.Found if i keep reducing sens to number4 or 6 just so it barley gives hum over target and just barley moves depth scale that is truly the center of filed.Easy to find small targets and the pull tabs that come in as 20.Gnd here is 62 to 88.Nickels 18/20.18 or 20 solid i have to check because could be ring.Any combo such as 16/20 18/22 14/16/20 usually junk small pull tab round foil size of nickel.18/20 almost always nickel or nice ring.Hope this helped some.Occasionally a green nickel or corroded nickel come in 16/20 16/18 and sound kind of broken or rough. But check area conditions.Every site and state has different soil.

Sometime when a signal is hard to decipher and it seems like it might be a good target,i will circle it and see if the signal is any better. If this doesn't help i will pinpoint target and them stomp the ground a few times with my foot causing a small tremor to object this usually breaks lose the object from what it is encrusted in and them will give you better readings when you swing over it again.Hope this helps

As i understand it discrimination on mxt only effect the sound and not vid.So on occasion when using low discrimination i will swing over the target and start turning up the dis.to see where it start to become broken and this also along with the vid gives me a better idea what the object might be.Dis set all the way i believe blocks up to number 55 or 57 on mxt usually leaving coins to break through. But keep in mind you should look at a vid list of old coins and some of there corresponding numbers.Again each state and city and sites changes this slightly due to minerals in ground iron in ground electrical interference etc.Seeing the mxt is based on i believe a nickel or dime, causes a can at say 11" do to signal strength to appear as a dime at 6" or 3 inches and similar a small target close to surface say three inches down the size of two bbs will read 8" or more.So your iron being a big object rusted broke through the dis. because of signal strength appeared to be 4" deep.Usually iron in relic mode pings in one direction and grunts in other direction.Hope this helped and hope most information was correct.Go to search engine and on mxt forum Look for a vid list.Good luck and Good hunting.
