New meter, new gremlins :rage:

Just got a new Elite meter for the GT. Been using the meter from my 2a.

Surprise, surprise  . Meter won't adjust high enough.

Swapped the new meter cable over to the 2a box, and it worked ok. OK....no big deal...just put the new meter on the 2a and leave the older meter on the GT.

Seemed like a good solution .........until.....

With the new meter on the 2a, I chose to install the S-12 for a coil on the 2a.

 now the meter won't adjust high enough. Found that the S-12 is the only coil I have that will not adjust high enough with that meter on the 2a.

Looks like I'm gonna have to open up the new meter and give it a tweek.

My other choices would be to calibrate to 500 instead of 550...........
Or not to use the S12 on the 2a with that meter...............

I did find the Elite meter to calibrate easier and hold numbers with more stability than the older XS meter. Just needs the internal calibration bumped up a bit.

May put the new one back on the GT after I get the kinks worked out. Might take a six pack to get the job done.

Art, Minelab changed the voltage a little bit on the GT. That's why the Elite meter won't calibrate correctly. I heard this from a good source.

Not working with all my coils on the 2a either.

Have read posts about the Elite meter not calibrating with different coils or even the stock coil on the Elite.

More inclined to believe that minelab got some parts that did not spec as expected.

Think I will put it back on the GT and tweek it to cal on all the coils. If not possible, then will set it up to accomodate MOST of the coils.

After better than 3 years with the stock 550 calibration, just not ready to learn different numbers and response patterns.

Not a real big deal. May decide to measure the ID voltage when working on it just to see what it is.

May be just like the 2a, with the difference just in meter components. can make it work one way or another.

....the Elite signal voltage to my meter reads 1.736v on a quarter (550) using an 8 inch Coinsearch coil. I'd be interested in knowing what the GT puts out under these conditions. I don't understand why changing the coil changes the signal voltage, but I have read so many posts on the subject that I assume that it does. Does it read lower with your larger coils? Do you have to tweak the calibration pot upward to read 550 on a quarter and are you running out of meter calibration adjustment? Is that the problema?
Thanks for the post. Been playing around with some ideas for the meter ... very timely subject.

Without digging back through my notes, seems to me that my 2a puts out a little less ID voltage than your Elite does.

Never had any problems with any coil with the older meter on the 2a. Did not have any problem with the same meter on the GT with any coil.

New Elite meter just won't adjust high enough on the GT with any coil, and won't adjust high enough on the 2a with the S-12.

Going to take it apart this week some time and see if I can tweek it up. Will measure the ID voltage while I'm at it.

Know that it takes very little voltage change to make a big difference in meter reading. Also know that there may be different components in the new meter. Stability with both detectors shows that something is changed. Possibly lower impedance input to reduce noise pickup. This would change loading on the ID line.

Will let you know what I come up with.

Might take it out for a while calibrated to 500. This gives zincs a dead on 490 reading. Would like to see how well it can distinguish the close screwcaps from zinc, and to see what kind of temperature drift I get.

Would like to know why some coils require different calibration. Will measure ID voltage with different coils. Know that the current demand from the battery pack is nearly identical between the BBS 800 coil and the S-12. Loading on the TX line should be about identical, so should not affect supply voltage to the meter power supply. Possible that different coils register phase shift of targets a bit different causing a slight difference in target ID.

Now, if I found a good place to hunt, I would not be fooling around with all this crap  .

Meter internal calibration was turned all the way down. Had to turn it up nearly all the way, but got it calibrated with the main control set to center.

Seems to work more like my old meter now......touchy, intermittent up/down count of 1.

Much better if calibrated to 500.

S-12 is history.........sounding like crap.
