New metal detector

Hi all I am new here. I have been reading post here for some time now so I am jumping in. From reading past posts I am going to get myself a new Tesro Cilbo detector. But my question here is I want to get my grandsons (ages 13 and 11) a good starter detector that they won't outgrow quickly. I am leaning towords the Compadre. Or should I just jump up to the Silver Umax? Any help from you experts would be appreciated. Thanks-Frank

i won a silver umax couple months ago, extremely simple, extremely impressed.

already found some silver on one of my last outings!

They won't out grow the silver as fast as the compadre. The silver has a sens adjustment which will be nice if they beach hunt or get into some mineralized soil. Plus its got a AM mode(not sure if its true AM). A lot more machine for a few more bucks. Just my 2 cents

Hay MK,

Welcome to tha forum from Arkie Land.

If you get tha Silver, tell them to set tha discrimination at foil
and tha sensativity at 7 or 8. You may be OK with sensativity
at 9 with your mild soil.

But, tha sens doesn't matter too much, unless it's too high.
Then it will sound off all tha time. Thay cain't find nuthin that
way.

Tha Silver may be over kill with tha extra knob and a switch.
Not to mention tha $88 per unit.

Tha Compadre. Tell them to put tha discrimination at foil or
a tad above and let them go.

You just need to help til thay get tha hang of it, or thay use
it to hammar tha ground with.lol

As far as out growing them. I don't have a clue. I'm a 60 year old kid and I
like tha Compadre so much, I got two of them. One with a 5.75 coil and one
with a 7" coil. Thay are known as MrSpeey and MisSpeedy..................

Got my first treasur hunting metal detector 26 years ago....... Got my first
Compadre one year ago.

I have not out grown Tha Speedy's yet.

Thanks guys. I am new at this game to. But hopefully not for long. I have had a White detector for years and only used it to find my property corner post pins. But no longer the two boys are growing up and I will have someone to go with. Just got the younger boy his first deer this weekend so now it's time for them to find some silver and gold. Finally time for granpa to. The info is helpful. Thanks-Frank

Much as I love my Silver, the Compadre is not as coil heavy as the Silver, mainly 'cause it comes with a smaller coil. They also won't be bothered quiet as much by the deep, larger trash targets,and if they are, they will be able to size the target better. Plus, they'll probably find enough by the time they "outgrow" it (?) so Papa won't have buy the next detector.

I can't see how you can go wrong with either one - you might get one then end up adding the other. When it came to Tesoro, to me, it was one of those "Can't have just one" kind of things. Just couldn't help it

Thanks guys for all the input. I will be ordering two new Tesoro detectors. A Cilbo for Grandpa and a Silver uMax for the Grandsons. I have a older White detector that we can use so all three can detect at the came time. The boys can't wait. Thanks again and a Happy Thanksgiving. Frank

Boy what a differance two days makes. I was going to order two Tesoro detectors on Monday a Cilbo and a Silver Umax. Well Saturday I found a as new Vaquero from a dealer on another forum for only 20.00 more than the Silver Umax. He gave me free shipping and a 90 day in-shop warrenty. So now I only will get a new Cilbo. Can't wait to get started.
