It's been a while since I

Welcome! Come on in and kick your shoes off!
I would just save it in my scrap pile or toss it in a water pitcher for bacteria control.
Does it really look like it's worth trying to "shine up"?

Welcome to the forum. I still swing my Toltec 100 occasionally when I get in really trashy areas. Having notch, VDI, and combined with a 4" coil, it does a great job of 'weeding' through the undesirables.
Gold and Silver come out of the ground pretty much the way they went in, with exception to the beach, where I've found some older silver that was black. You might trying dipping just a tip of the end of the chain in tarnX (not something to do with older, valuable coins). If it's silver, it'll show immediately. If it's brass, then a wash or soaking in Vinegar usually removes oxidation and tarnish. Either of these could affect other metals adversely.

No, not really. Definitely don't expect to put any shine back on it, just a little lighter color so it's more recognizable.

It's been years ago but if I remember the model correctly I had a Toltec 100 also. I don't remember it having VDI like I see on some but the notch feature sure was nice. Yes the beach these items came off of is salt water and the salt really kicks butt on most anything metal. Fresh water is much more forgiving.
This "tarnX" you mentioned is this something one would find in a hardware store? I've never heard of it.

Thank you both for your welcome.

You can find it at almost all grocery stores. It's not a polish, but will remove surface tarnish on silver instantly.

Welcome.

Welcome!
A good bunch of guys here and I know they will not steer you wrong!

Thanks again. I'll have to pick some "tarnX" up and give it a try. The oxidation is kind of heavy, so it will be interesting to see how well it works. :)
