Hi there!

Just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a new detectorist to the hobby! My buddy and I have been gold prospecting/panning/sluicing/high banking this past year so I figured MD'ing would be a great addition to the "finders" hobby.

My wife and I both grew up in Lethbridge, but have lived in Calgary 5 years now. I've got a long list I've put together since scouting around good MD'ing sites here over the past few weeks. My main passion is flying/competing with giant scale RC airplanes in precision aerobatics, but I figured this would be a great hobby for those "not so nice weather" days. :)

For my first detector, after chatting with (XXXXXXXX) Edit...and doing roughly 40-50 hours of research on detectors, I ended up ordering a Fisher F2 + 4"/8"/10" coils + carry bag + pinpointer for $275. :) It should arrive Monday and I'm exstatic, though I'm not sure my wife will let me maiden it before Christmas, lol. I really wanted a detector that would hit canadian clad, thus requiring a good TID numeric system, as originally I was planning on the Ace 250 instead. After all my research, I've concluded that the F2 is a pretty big step forward from the Ace, but we'll see once I can test it. It has a lot of + over the Ace 250, and I haven't heard of a single person who has owned both who would choose the 250 over the F2. IMHO the TID #'s are the biggest plus for Canadian clad differing in content % depending on the year.

For anyone interested I also picked up a sweet Fiskars digger from Home Depot for $10, made my own sand scoop w/ lots of holes just slightly smaller than a dime in a hand held paint bucket. It even has a magnet. I've also picked up a 3 pack of zippered pouches from Lowes, a tool holder, a headlamp for night searching from Walmart, a bunch of coin pages, coin organizers, etc. I should be set!! :)

I went through a few piles of clad I have lying around and pulled out all the years of clad of different composition to air test and possibly throw in a test garden later. I realize for the hallow effect to occur that the coins must be in the ground for a few years, so I may just keep them for air testing ID'ers. :)

For anyone interested, here is my youtube channel which I'll be posting MD'ing vids to soon I hope! Subscribe to me if you like. http://www.youtube.com/halflife82

Cheers!!!

Great choice with the Fisher F2!

I have a Minelab E-Trac with about $1000 in coils/pointer/etc + some killer programs I uploaded on it and it is a beast if once you figure it out.... BUT.... my back-up machine is a Fisher F2.

In my opinion, that is the best bang-for-a-buck machine out there, and as a back-up machine I am not brand loyal to anyone.

I take it out here adn there or when there's a call for rain (I'd rather ruin a $200 machine than a $1500 machine) and the F2 is great!

I like the F2's pin-pointing (spot on with the lightsaber sound), light weight, TDI (which the other brands DON'T have at that price point), and turn-on-and-go simplicity,

It also has the same main board as the F4 (see the video of the guy that cracked F2 and F4 open?) with just less features turned enabled.

I run the F2 as "hot as I can" based on where I am at and the depth is amazing for a $200 machine.

Just my opinion...

Congratz!

Love my F2...Found silver, gold and some of my best stuff with it...you will love it.
Your Canadian coins are funny on this one.
Pennies should be copper or zinc, not sure about the rest, except on a vacation trip up in Michigan, I dug a Canadian quarter that did not come in 80-82 like our american quarters usually do.

This thing jumped from zinc to dime and then quarter then back again.
You will figure it out, but always a good idea to dig it all...especially when you are new.

Thanks for the comments and positive responses on this F2 everyone!

I just wanted to report back that I'm IN LOVE with this new F2!!!! :D I've never owned a metal detector before, but wow is this machine nice to use. I love the pinpointing. I feel I've learned the machine very fast. I've used it ~10 hours now, and I'm at the point where I'm digging less than 3" diameter plugs and hitting the coins every time. :) The response is superb in trash. I honestly can't believe how much garbage and conductive stuff is in the ground! It blew my mind, as when researching, I figured I'd never use the 4" coil. Well it's my go-to coil now. haha. I can even go within 10" of all the metal poles in the tot lots with it. Pinpointing is dead easy, and the desensitizing on 2nd pinpoint is key for extremely accurate targeting. I have a feeling a lot of people don't know about this feature on the F2. Sometimes when I'm lazy or theres a ton of trash in one spot, I just hit pinpoint and scan the area to pick out each item. Then I desensitize and hit it dead on, often just flicking the coin out with my digging tool from just below the surface. Also, as bad as people make the handheld pinpointer out to be, I actually really like it. It makes findings the goodies in the hole dead easy. Mine seems to ring off within 5/8" or so when tuned properly.

Really the only complaint I've found thus far with it is that our frozen winter ground around midnight likes to make it go a bit crazy on mid-high sensativity settings. Likely because of the high moisture in the air and frozen ground though. Turning it down quite a bit really helps. Likely an issue with any auto ground balanced machine.

Last night I went out again (3rd hunt) for 5 hours until 1am and pulled back 35 coins. :D Nothing old, but oldest was a 1968 quarter. I was digging everything, but eventually got sick of all the iron nails so I disc'd that out. Had a lot of fun in that trashy area. Here's a pic of last night's finds:

And here's a video of my very first outing last week. :D Mostly junk, but 2 playgrounds gave it up cheerfully, haha. For those interested, feel free to subscribe as I'll be posting many more F2 videos in the future:

I'm still in the process of putting together my huge spreadsheet of TID's on this machine for all our different years of coin compositions. I'll post it for everyone once complete.

Cheers!

I've had my F-2 for a couple weeks now, and although I've found quite a few goodies, I'm still confused about the thing. So far, I'm not feeling like I really understand the notching, and the majority of my hits seem to be down low in the iron range. A lot of times when swinging, I'll get that high "squeak" and then I can't duplicate it. I've tried different swing speeds and it still won't repeat. I'm beginning to think I should get the 4 inch coil. Especially after reading what you've all written here.
