Well, hello... New to the forum and just want to say I'm glad to be here.
Nice to find a place where I can talk 'bout my own kind of detector (without having to weed out the weaklings):surrender:
By the way, I'm thinking of buying a detech 18" coil. Any one have any thoughts? It's as old as my XS, But, new in the box.
 
hello I never had used 18,but my friend trying once. its huge and heavy, and if your xs original lower rod coco color you will broke it.. only one posible use is beach.. but if you new minelab xs owner buy if price very low, because you will use it just for one time good luck
 
I'm sure you will like this forum and the great people that are members of it.

There's a lot of forumites with a vast knowledge of the Explorer series of detectors.

I've never used a coil that large before. I'm sure it would wear out my arm/shoulder. I'm more comfortable with the 11" Pro Coil.

It is a good coil...but you will definitely need to be hunting an open area or field because it isn't practical in parks.

I put a few hours on a used one I bought a couple years ago and did find some good coins with it...but I don't hunt open areas enough to warrant having one...so I sold it.

If your in the market for a coil upgrade I would go with the 10 x 12 SEF coil...12" Sunray coil...or Minelab pro coil.

In my opinion they will all get the same depth or better than the 18" detech...and a be a lot more "useable" in more areas as well.

All this being said...if you hunt open areas where there wouldn't be too much trash passing under that 18" coil...and you have been given a good price on it...you should take that into consideration too.
 
I sometimes go for hours with the stock coil, so I got a thingy. Like having power steering. Should help with the 18" a lot.
I was looking for a larger coil for cache hunting in the open desert and beach hunting (so nice to be so close to each):smoke:
But, maybe I might go 14" or the butterfly S.E.F.
