Hello,

Well, after about six month of analysis paralysis (and a green light from the better half), I have joined what appears to be the friendliest
hobbies out there. I must admit that the friendly banter and open opinions are what convinced me that not only am I going to enjoy
this, but I have found a forum that listens to the good and bad.
My first choice of tools: The Garrett Ace 250
I had actually made this decision after visiting the Garrett HQ in Garland, TX. Lucky for me, I can drive there in about 10 minutes.

First Outing: April 5th 2pm
I have 4 boys (6-13) and with the additional of 3 of their best buddies, we walked across the street to a local park. I think I have
a pretty good idea what "Trash Site" means due to the number of :pulltab: and crushed cans we discovered. (a dime on the 250).
I also found what looks like a piece of slag (about 1" long x 3/4 wide). Since I don't know what it is, I am going
to have to ask for advice on the best way to find out on the cheap. The funny thing is that my boys are convinced it is a meteor!!
Second outing April 6th: Hit the local elementary school. a few coins, fake gold ring and a lot of trash, and I realized that I was hooked.
Lucky for me, 2 of my boys as well! I had planned on getting a 150 for the boys to share, until they asked the critical question: It has a PinPoint button,
right?
"Hey honey, have I told you how much I love you lately?" Gotta hit Craig's List and hope for the best.

I look forward to the adventure!!

That's great! I would just get another 250. Don't forget to ask the "better half" you'll need a sniper coil! On those aluminum cans - Raise your coil off the ground a full 12 inches and swing. If you still get a strong beep then it's a large target most likely a can.

Thanks khouse.
Good advice on the cans! I have an area of the yards to chew up and plant the trash I've dug.
I'll be able to practice some of the tips I receive. Again, thanks for everything as I need
as many tips as I can get!

Welcome clubbashaw....

I am also in Garland Forest Lane and Plano Road area. If you want a clean site with little trash to
have have some fun, Check out the soccer park over near Hawaiian Falls. I am over
there most every other Sunday.

This cool because I have yet to run across another detectorist from Garland.:clapping:

It is quite addictive......

Congrats on your new addiction, do your sons a favor, don't get them the Ace 150. As much as I love Garrett products the 150 falls short in many areas, it doesn't have a Pinpoint function, has less levels of discrimination (5 vs 12), less mode settings (3 vs 5). For the money saved the features lost do not make up for the $$$. It is a lot more fun when it is a family outing any way. One feature you will lose with a second detector is your digging crew, they will be busy hunting their own treasure and you will spend more time on your knees! I have considered buying a package of the little flags they sell at the hardware store for marking property lines or sprinkler locations and just sticking them in the locations pinpointed and letting the kids dig them up but then we would have a fight over the good finds... Happy Hunting!

Congrats on the 250 when you learn it you will love it. I have learned to program mine the custom mode when I find that I am in a trashy area on a air test and eliminate a lot of things , but then I know I am missing a few but make up for it on another less trashy site
And also welcome to the forum. Lots of good people and advice here with lots of sharing .
