New lenses

This is my first post, though I have been looking over the posted photos for a while and think they are outstanding.

I do mostly wildlife photos (which I will try to post in the near future), but have been trying lately to do sporting events. I recently purchased a Canon 20D after having a Digital Rebel for a while. This past weekend I tried photographing a major high school basketball tournament and all I had was my 100-300mm Quantaray lens, as my 170-500mm Sigma lens was too big.

My photos turned out pretty bad, I had to put the ISO @ 800 and still that wasn't enough, shutter speed at 250 and aperture at 4.5, and half the time the auto focus picked up the audience in the background instead of the subject.

Anyway, I decided I need to spend a little money and get a very good lens. The first lens I'm looking at is a Sigma 120-300mm F2.8. The second is a Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS. Canon states on their website for this lens that the IS provides up to 3 stops of "shake" correction. Which lens is the best option, and what is 3 stops of "shake" correction?
Thanks

Maybe you need to switch to spot AF and make sure the AF marker is on your subject.

Regarding your Quatrary lens....I've never heard of a good one.

Cheers!

I was going back and forth between the focus points, and manual, didn't realize it wasn't focusing where I wanted it until I saw it on my computer monitor.
I'm starting to realize that about Quantaray, but it was an inexpensive option when I began taking photos, back when I didn't realize that good lenses are often more expensive than the cameras they attach to.
Thanks.

"Shake Correction" is Canon's version of Nikon Vibration Reduction lenses. If you are shooting with slower shutter speeds the lens kicks in and stabilizes the frame. I'm not sure about the 3 stops thing.

I swear by Vibration Reduction lenses. They have saved my but more than once.
