New Learner Question

Say you have a person like me that is in the process of learning the Explorer and sorting out all the options and what works best in what situation; however, in this learning process you don't want to miss any good targets if you can help it. What would be good "base" settings to operate from? You know, something you could switch back and forth to from experimental settings so that you could still "capture" a majority of the targets you might pass over. This would be assuming you have fairly neutral, clean ground. There must be something better than factory presets that a person could use as a basis. Thanks again, Ray. I have had some valuble suggestions as to sensitivity and gain...thank for that!
