New Infinium owner needs advice

I've been TH for 25+ years with VLF and PI's and this week I picked up an Infinium. Took it out for the first time this morning to the beach and it's quite different from other PI's i've used. Here are some comments and questions I have.

After initial GB, with discrimination at zero I began searching near the waters edge. I noticed that the machine would false each time I swung the coil back towards the water, going from the damp sand to the wet sand. I assumed this was due to the salt content and dialed back the discrimination to about 4 at which time the falsing stopped. I did start picking up some coins. I noticed that if I dumped my scoop out onto the sand to pinpoint my find, the signal was not very loud. In fact, there were times that I could barely hear it even though the coin was right on the surface. Since neither the Infinium or the waterproof headphones has a volume control I'm thinking that might be the issue? Even when I located a quarter the volume wasn't that great. This leads me to my main question, what is the best method for GB the Infinium in the wet sand? Also, is the 10 x 14 coil the best one to use? Is the eliptical coil or 8" coil more sensitive to smaller objects and how do they compare for depth vs the 10 x 14 coil?

I know every machine has a learning curve and the Infinium is no exception. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks

I'm still fairly new in learning my Infinium's characteristics, but from the reading I've done, you have solved the falsing as others have recommended. In my area, I don't seem to suffer from falsing when the salt water breaks over my coil, for whatever reason, and I run the Discrimination at 0. In regards to the low audio signal, contrary to conventional wisdom with other detectors, turn up your Threshold to increase your audio, and according to others, your detection depth will actually increase.

The trend seems to be going to the larger 10 X 14" mono coil to cover more area than the 8" mono coil. Both of the mono coils are lighter than the stock DD, but I've read that the largest mono has a slightly higher risk to falsing with the salt water breaking over the coil compared to the 8" mono. I've been running the largest mono coil exclusively, with no issues.

Scroll back through the posts in this forum, and you will find lots of info on your questions. John from Edmonton has a lot of very informative posts.

Let us know if turning up the Threshold suggestion works out for you.

Yes by all means turn your threshold up as it is the volume, also of target response and increases depth also. Set it around 5 fornormal use. 4-6 is normal.

The "false" signals you mention are normal because this machine is very sensitive as it is a gold prospecting machine designed to find tiny gold nuggets...it just happens to be water proof, which in my opinion is its achillis heal.

Most likely GB technique like you questioned.
1) Find your operating freq in "Lock"
2) Set zero disc and Threshold to just audible
3) GB in "Fast Tack" , pumping and leaving coil on sand for 5-10 seconds, pump again to sand, GB comes in pretty quick
4) GB in "Slow Track" the same way
5) GB in "Lock"

If falsing occurs at this point there is 2 ways to help eliminate it. First would be to increase disc upwards to "2", but no further. The second is actually by lowering Threshold, which is lowering the sensitivity of the unit. Even a Threshold setting of zero will hit on deep coins/rings for beach hunting, but could hamper nugget shooting.

This should help. have fun.
