New in box ??? Hmmmmm

ringdigger

New member
I have just purchased my first detector, a Tesoro Vaquero which is supposed to be brand new. However I am not sure if it is. The box had been opened by the dealer prior to shipping supposedly to throw in a cople of magazines. I also noticed that the battery contacts look as though a battery has been installed and removed more than a few times, the entire detector has been completely assembled, I can see see this where the poles fit together and where the thumb skrew tightens on the searchcoil. Last but not least the search coil looks to have been cleaned, eccept they missed a couple of spots. Does this sound normal? Do these detectors get assembled at the factory and get tested outside before being shipped? I tryed calling Tesoro but they're not open on the weekend and it's kind of driving me a little crazy any help with this would be appreciated.

Is it possibe that your detector may have been an in the store display model ?? So technically it is a brand new never used unit.. It was just put together for display purposes...

Display purposes plus someone may have tried it outside near the store with the owner present !!

I have 2 Tesoros - A Cibola and a Tiger shark. Both came to me completely unassembled and with no sign of any kind of wear or use. I would hope if your Vaq. was a display model that you got it a bit cheaper.

You may be right technically, Mark. But I don't consider a display model the same as a brand new detector, and I don't think most buyers would. Usually a display unit will be discounted a small amount when being sold.

A reputable dealer selling a display model will describe it as such, and usually discount it a small amount when selling it.

It could be an honest mistake of course, but maybe the dealer saw ringdigger as a newbie that he could take advantage of.

For future reference, there are several dealers who sponsor this forum whom you can count on to be honest and reputable.

To further elaborate, ringdigger, you could contact that dealer and give him a chance to make things right. He's probably not going to take the detector back, and you probably don't want him to.

But maybe he'd be willing to throw in something in the way of supplies to make up for the small amount that the detector should have been discounted.

At any rate, don't lose sleep over it. A display Vaquero wouldn't be discounted by much anyway.

Tesoro makes fine detectors, enjoy your new Vaquero and welcome to the hobby!

As long as it is not all dinged up and it works properly i would not worry about it. But if it was a demo the dealer should have told. Also customer will ask a dealer to test a few of them out to find the hottest running one they have in stock, so it may be that as well.

Thanks for the input guys, I guess I was a little miffed because I did specificaly ask if the detector was a new in the box unit, and the dealer said it was brand new. Well new is new and used is used, even if it was just a display unit, which it was not judging by the dirt on the coil, my guess is that it has few hours on it. Up here in Canada we pay about a 100 bucks more plus tax than down in the States, and thats alot of money for me, $525 plus $36 tax to be exact, also took some sweet talkin' to the wife. Anyways after reading all your comments I decided to assemble it and do the air tests described in the manual and it seems to be working just fine. Now I just cant wait for the snow to melt so I can try it out in my yard. Thanks again guys!!!!

or as soon as you can and voice your concerns about the condition of the unit you received... Tell him brand new in the box units do not have dirt residue on the coil or cover as you stated...... If he's not willing to reimburse some $$$ back to you or throw in a digger, trash/coin pouch etc....to make the deal rite.... Then tell him point blank that he will NEVER SEE YOUR BUSINESS AGAIN and you will also make certain anyone you talk to about purchasing a detector to STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY !!! Once bad word of mouth gets out about a business, and sales start to fall off, he'll think twice about screwing the next guy...

Good luck Mark ( ohio )

So I was going to call the dealer today, but I got up this morning and brewed myself a coffee, then decided that I wasn't going to stress about it anymore. I'm sure that I've got a good machine and that's that. Just another lesson learned and I'm over it. I'll be trying another dealer next time though and asking a few more questions for sure. My only stress now is the snow isn't melting fast enough...LOL

I bought my Silver from local dealer and he told me it was his wifes' favorite MD. It was clean and I was sure it was working up to par. As long as you have the card to register with Tesoro I would say let the dealer know if it concerns you otherwise let it go.

that dealer reads this particular forum . If he does I'll bet he was sweating it just a little bit . I would say you're doing the best thing as far avoiding more stress on yourself . Heck , he could deny it anyway and say the Mailman used it. Tesoro's are pretty hardy machines and I would bet your's is going to be ok .Hope the weather gets better for you soon .

Well guy's I just couldn't leave it alone, and I called the dealer today. I asked him if it was possible that he made a mistake and sent the wrong detector. He said he may of demoed it a few times and it must have slipped his mind, as he had that one around for awhile. Anyway, long story short He asked what he could do to make it right. I asked him if he had another one in stock and he said he was expecting one any day now and to just ship the other one back, and he would send the new one in a sealed box. So I guess he will get some more of my business in the future after all. I thought that was pretty cool of him !

I would wait till I have the new one in my posession before the old one was sent back... Otherwise you send yours and may be without a detector for some lenghty period ( due to back-order, forgetfullness, or anyother excuse that could be said ).... Get the replacement, check it out, then send yours..

In the future, should you ever 'order' another detector, specify 'to be shipped in a factory sealed box.

if i pay the price for a new detector i would expect a new detector, not a demo unit. if he discounted the price and told you it was a demo unit that is a different story. there are plenty of honest dealers out there next time you buy a detector. good luck......roger

I received my brand new Vaquero 2 days ago with a new rain cover at no extra cost. I'm happy and will deal with this dealer agian. Still waiting for a little more snow to melt anyways so I didn't loose any detecting time. Another week and maybe I can live up to my name (lol). Theres a ring somewhere in my yard that was lost in the 70's and I know the aproximate area so I hope to find it.

Hey Mark, I live in Central British Columbia, Canada. Theres not alot of snow left, just patches here and there and the ground is still pretty solid in most places. It won't be long now though, I can hardly wait!!!
