New Hunt Location... Advice needed.

I have decided to start hunting a couple of plowed fields in my area, and am wondering what the proper technique is in dealing with the uneven terrain? The fields were recently plowed, and there is about a 10" difference between the high and low parts of each row.

Wear tall boots for ankle support, walk 90 degrees to the rows so you can swing the coil "with" them, and raise/lower the coil as needed. Take a long handled shovel (I use a tile spade) to save all the stooping. Count on the terrain slowing you down a fair amount, but pay close attention to your footing.

Expect a lot of iron, assuming there was something that stood there at one time. Good luck!

Some of the guys i hunt with have started using the 8 in coils in the corn fields and just going down the rows much like was mentioned keep the coil as low as possible. Its alike like beach hunting ... for a while you really need to dig most everything. There will be targets that after awhile you can just ignore, but you have to realize targets are going to act differently because you are dealing with more iron in the soil, hot rocks, iron its self, and disturbed soil. You didnt mention what type of detector you were using... but i can tell you that you will be finding uncommon targets... like brass, pewter, lead, buttons and copper. So if you want to have fun dig a good many of the targets and you will find interesting things and learn a wealth of information that you dont get in a park.

I'm not sure which detector I'm going to be poking around with. I was planning to use my ace 350, but it has a large coil, so I may hit it with my teknetics delta. It has an 8" coil. If it seems to be really trashy, would I be better off with my discovery 2200 with the 4" nugget coil?
Thanks guys!

I'd at least take something (another detector) with a smaller coil because the width of the furrows won't allow the larger coils down in them, so you'll be trying to cock the detector at odd angles to get the coil into them (the furrows).
