From London Ontario.......Just ordered my new GTI 2500 Pro, delivery next week, First ever detecter, I've read the books but would appreciate any imput.
I'm retired and looking forward to spring, meanwhile I'll practise or whatever..thanks </span>

Bob,
You have just entered a very addicting hobby. It does require some learnin in the old memory bank. I suggest for you to be patient, ask questions, read, read some more and have a blast. I have a 1500 which is a baby bro to the 2500. I have never used a 2500, but from what I have read you have a fine machine. This forum is a very informative bunch. Lots of the members have crossed several of the bridges that you will be coming to. Don't be bashful and keep us posted. Again welcome to the world of the underground.

a super machine. I have had 2 of them and at present
don't. I will say that it is the most fun machine
you will ever own. Some don't like the "voice" in
your head but I love it. The imaging + depth is
awesome. All metal is the best I have ever seen
as far as depth and IDing is concerned. Wondering why
I don't have one, If I could afford it I would, but
the processor is a little slow in the Disc. mode
in comparison to the detector I use. But with the
250 speed up greatly, I suspect Garrett's new
%#@*&%$% machine, will be the machine to beat.
Again, welcome, and get ready for the fun to start.

Thanks Larry (Omaha) and RichardTN ; I appreciate your responding, my son is an avid user as is his friend Steve Garbel ( Whatzit forum ) great hunting in Canada, all the buckles and stuff you guys lost in the battle of 1812, I'll keep you posted, I have a book on Ghost Towns in Ontario.

You've picked the best of the best!!! Garrets are hard to beat. The 2500 is a bit heavy next to a lot of machines, but it will fill your pouch with goodies. I have 4 garrets including the 2500 and use them all, depending on where I am hunting. Good luck and log in frequently for Q & A and post what that 2500 has freed from the ground.

Good luck. You've picked a great hobby. Stop by anytime. Plenty of folks here to help you out. For the first 100 hours I would suggest you run in coin mode intil you familiarize yourself with the machine.
Make sure the first wind of the cable goes over the top of the shaft and is snugly wound. Many of us tape the cable to the shaft up about a foot or so.
Run the sensitivity at 6 or 6.5. Scan with the coil off the ground an inch or so. Pinpointing is crucial for correct readings. When you locate a target move the coil all the way off it, push pinpoint, then move back over the target. Watch the blocks at the top of the display ( signal intensity ) and when they line up all the way across, the target will be under the center hole in the coil. With a little practice pinpointing is dead on. Good luck.

I grew up not too far from that area. There are lots of great sites to hunt within a 100 mile radius. You have an excellent machine to do it with too! You found a wonderful resource site for your Garrett machine. Keep in touch....

Thanks Bill for your suggestions, I have printed them out. We have a Mobile home at Wildwood conservation lake & park 25 miles from our home in London, a good place for me to practise, once the snow has gone.
I really appreciate all the imput I have received,
thanks again
Bob

Hi John
We go to Grand bend and points East and West every summer, I am just 20 miles from Port Stanley with one son living there so will go there as well,
thanks for writing
Bob

Unfortunately no addiction ceters for this hobby and you will be hooked after your first nice find..Do read all you can practice programming the machine and when the good weather comes in , hours, days etc. in the field will allow you to learn the finer points of detecting...

Hi Dan
Your up early, thanks for your imput, when the weather clears in PA it'll be nice here, I'm going to Barbados in January so I e-mailed the Gov't and the Tourist offices to see if there is a problem with outsiders using metal detectors on their beaches.
I don't want to take any of their National Treasures, lost or otherwise.
