New guy......

New guy here but not new to detecting. I stumbled onto the Forum and it kinda got me worked up again to start detecting again. I've been idle for years. I use a Golden Sabre II that I believe I've had since mid eighties maybe???? When I first started I hit all the playgrounds, parks, etc. and just wanted coin count to pay for the machine. I paid the machine off after approx. 5 months and coin count was just over 7300. Once I paid the machine off I concentrated on old coins. I've started back up yesterday and got me a nice Merc dime today in some tuff hunting. Good to be back at it and back/hands are killing me....lol Here's a few shots of some favorites from my collection......

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. I'm in western Montana.....

Welcome back to the :detecting:hobby.:
Nice collection of silver. Congrats !

Nice finds and welcome!!

I know youre still pulling treasure out, but it might be time to upgrade detectors. In No Way am I suggesting that a man that knows his detector cant outhunt everyone else, but theres been a lot of advancement since the 80's. I know- an 80's Whites Coinmaster was my last machine before my return to detecting and my Safari. (you do have a pinpointer, right.... just that 80's thing made me have to ask). And Nice Silver!

Thanks for the welcome guys......

Not sure about getting a newer machine? I do not have a pinpointer and never seen one until the other day on a lot of the youtube vids. If you guys really think the new stuff is that much better than my old Golden Sabre II then convince me and maybe I'll look into another Tesoro....?????

I promise that using a Garrett Propointer (best) or the Minelab (2nd best imo) version for 1 day will have you wondering how you ever found anything without it!

What I like the most is the automatic constant groundbalancing of the modern machines. And DD/Butterfly coils.

Now again, I believe that a man that is one with his detector can outhunt just about anyone, so I cant say unequivocally that you need to update, but afaik all the 80's machines used a single frequency. Todays machines commonly use 3 and some as many as 28 frequencies to get a better resolution of whats there. That doesn't always make a difference, but sometimes it does.

Thanks K.......

I wouldn't say "I'm one with the machine" by any means and I still struggle with the notch at times. I will say that I have a pretty nice collection of silver and attribute that to hunting slower and I try to be thorough if I have time. I like to leave a place THINKING that I've hunted it to the best of my ability....lol

I think I'll bring this up over on the Tesoro forum and see what the boys over there feel and what they might recommend in the new Tesoro lineup? Probably no reason to switch brands as the GSII has performed great and I like the warranty plus they seem to be better priced than some of the others with all the wistles & bells??? I've been idle for quite awhile and it's time to get back in the game as I recently retired and have the time now to pursue.....

Thanks again for the heads up.......

What I'd do (and did) was to look around and find some other metal detectorists, like say a local club, and try their machines head to head against yours; just to see what you like and don't like. Tesoros are a good machine, but you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't consider other quality brands as well. Don't get rid of your current machine if you do get another one- there will be times that you go back to it just for fun.

And hey, anytime you pay your machine off in 5 months, you are pretty close to zen with that sucker imo! It took me right at a year to pay mine off.

I really like the Tejon with dual discrim. Second, favorite is the Vaquero. Both are great machines. Good luck and HH!
