Hello all. I'm new to metal detecting so I thought I'd join the forum to learn some about the hobby and, more particularly, about how to use the MXT Pro.

I don't know if it's customary or not but, but I thought I'd tell everyone a little about myself and why I joined the forum. As you may have guessed by my user name, I'm a cop. Actually, I

i wish you and your father long yrs. of hunting. i wish i could have that with my sons. welcome to the forum. your father picked one of the easiest and simplist machines to use. also very versitile. a wide range of coils for differant types of hunts. the best teacher is getting out and turning it on. the ground varies from state to state, park to park and sometimes from one section of the park to another so the vdi#s can be differant. how wet the ground is or dry. nothing is set in stone.
did i mention how great it is you get to hunt with your dad? i can only imagine how happy he is about that.
your machine has a prospecting mode. put it in that mode to find out how minerlized your ground is. as with most things you got the main machine. now comes the part about gathering the optional gear to make it your own. differant coils for differant hunts. what digger should you use? i recommend finding the book, "The MXT EDGE", by Jeff Foster.it's better than the manual. too bad a copy doesn't come with every MXT.your dad probly is a great source of info on how to hunt and why use this coil over that coil and settings. most machine are basically the same science. just fancier bells and whistles. something to remember always. the tones, vdi#s and info on the screen are indicators only. with practice you'll learn what your machine is telling you and you'll dig less trash. you will always dig trash. just less of it as you learn. may you and your dad live long and prosper. i'm so jealous of your dad.

HH ( happy hunting )

Hi and welcome to the forum. I've found that the VDI numbers are quite close compared to others. It does depend on a few other situations as to the difference in ground mineralization. Overall, there's not a whole lot of jumping around on the numbers.......give or take a couple. Your best bet it to practice practice practice. Get to know your machine. When and if you do use another coil, sometimes the VDI numbers are 2 digits different.

I wish you lots of wonderful treasure hunting with your Father. You've got the best treasure of them all.......Your Dad hunting along side of you! Thank you for your work as an officer also.

HH and we'll be here to help out,

Nancy

I have both an MXT and an MXT Pro. I have not done a side by side comparison but I believe their VDI readings are nearly identical when using the same coil. Some coils, usually the third party coils, can be consistently off by 2 or 3 VDI numbers.

Heavily mineralized soil can cause VDI numbers to start shifting. The higher the mineralization, the more shifting that can take place.

I suspect your story is causing quite a few older parents and adult children to re-evaluate their relationships. The story warms my heart ... in fact, it brought a tear.

Good fortune to the both of you. Sounds like you are already sharing a treasure.

Thanks for the imput good people. I've got Jeff Foster's book on order. As an investigator for a rural sheriff's department, I know almost all the counties residents and I've been able to get permission to hunt lots of old house sites that I know have never been searched. We've found several old silver dollar's, wheats and such on them. Dad's more excited than I've seen him in a long time. Me too for that matter. I think geting out regular and detecting has been good for his health as well. Well, thanks again for the help. I'm still learning about the hobby and I'm sure I'll have some other questions for the forum soon. Peace.

Welcome
WOW what a treasure you have found....
Hunting with Dad is the best...
Read Jeffs book front to back and then read it again.
With that applied knowledge and practice you will hunt with the best.
We look forward to hearing of more of you finds and we love pictures!!

Fantastic finds, but hunting with your Father is priceless.

We took my dad hunting before his death. He couldn't get down to dig, but he was having a blast! :cheekkiss: What lovely memories. PRICELESS!

Welcome to the forum. My Dad is 92 years old and a retired Pittsburgh police officer. I am 55 and disabled. Our time spent together treaure hunting is something money can never buy. We both had great excitement today when we dug up an 1854 penny.
Be careful out there at work. Things aren't the way they use to be. And above all, I admire you for spending time with your father.By the way,my Dad is a WW!! vet and went around the world. God bles our fellow police oficers and the men and women who protect our freedom

Looks like you have already found the the true treasure.

I wish I had started in this hobby earlier. Being that I just hit the speed limit and having back and knee surgery does not help. Your lucky having your dad with you is a blessing.

Here's a link to a page with a breakdown of what the VDI numbers could indicate. http://nevada-outback-gems.com/MXT_files/the_mxt_faq2.htm

Welcome to this forum. There are so many knowledgeable people here. As others have said "You've already got the best treasure you could ever find".Metal detecting with your Dad is awesome. My Dad passed at a young age and I have so many great memories that I cherish. HH and I'm looking forward to hearing about your finds......... Jack from NH

Thanks ToadWhisperer

The link you provided will help me understand some of the operations
that are frustrating me so much.

Hi, I'm also new to this..could someone elaborate on VDI? And, the numbers next to it? Sorry..I don"t understand high tech stuff..I am trying..teach me! Thanx, Theresa

Theresa, the VDI, "Visual Discrimination Indicator", gives you a rough idea of what's beneath your coil based mainly on size and conductivity. It's not an exact science because of all the variables such as ground mineralization, object orientation, object depth and masking (one target affecting another). Check the link I posted above for some really good info on the MXT's.

Good luck
Joe

tkarlowi, If you do a search on the MXT forum, you will find a lot about the VDI numbers. There's many topics about the VDI and balancing, etc. and basic information on using the MXT in past posts. HH, Nancy
