New guy with GT

lucasberg

New member
Got my GT last night and of course today it's raining.

I'm new to this board and I could not figure out how to send a PM to Critterhunter .

If you read this Critterhunter I'm trying to figure out what are the + & - battery tabs are on the GT for the lipo mod.
Everything I convert to lipo now a days.

I look forward to sharing my finds here guys.

Joey

dont worry you will figure it out , its a good detector

Hi. I don't think you can PM people until you have enough posts up? Anyway, welcome to the forum. Slide the battery holder all the way open and then pull up on one side of the top cover until it pops off. You'll see a black and a red wire in a little compartment off to the side. Obviously the red is positive and the black is negative. I spliced right into those to hook up my battery plug. Then I melted away some of the wall between that and the battery holder area so the plug can route into it. If you are using the right plug (not a deans, the smaller.....what is it called...JXS plug? No, but it's J-something) it will fit in that little compartment out of the way when going back to AA batteries for use, if you ever do that again.

I'm surprised that you are new to the forum yet somehow you've already dug up the old threads on using a lipo? Anyway, welcome to the forum and most importantly give yourself time to learn the Sovereign. At first you may hate it and for sure won't understand it well. I didn't at first but it's the deepest machine I ever owned and love it now. Biggest issue for me was that small targets sounded HUGE on it. Coins give a response that was like going over a can with my other detectors. Also, if you have trouble learning pinpointing with the middle of the coil then just wiggle the coil backwards (no need to go into pinpoint mode to do this) until the target just disappears and it will be right at the edge of the coil.

Also, run the machine in Auto for a while so you know how it's supposed to act and how the threshold is supposed to be. I'd recommend hunting a modern school or park at first where there will be plenty of modern coins to practice on. Worst thing to do is to first go to a pounded site where there won't be many good signals to dig. Do that later when you learn the machine more.

Also, keep your sweeps slow. Like 2 to 4 seconds per sweep. If the threshold keeps dropping out then that is a sign that you are swinging too fast (unless of course there is iron present).

Thanks Guys

I'm coming from an AT Pro that would not run great in wet sand so I got a refurbished GT.
I plan on logging some serious hours on it . I'm printing out a bunch of settings .

If it runs better on the wet sand and false's a lot less it will have been worth it for me.
I picked up a 180 meter last night on ebay so that should help too.

I'll post my first trip hopefully soon.

Noise Band 2 (matches the charts for the Sovereign better....Band 1 will change the numbers for nickles somewhat). Disc and notch at zero. Iron Mask On. All metal switch to pinpoint so when you flip over to all metal you are in PP mode if you use it. A lot of people don't use PP mode but just PP in discrimination.

Lucaberg; welcome to the forum - this place is great; a lot of good information here! I'm new to the GT, and having a blast learing it. My hearing isn't the best, but I'm getting better at understanding the sounds the GT makes, and interpreting the depth more accurately now too. It takes a little time, but log the hours using it. Other people hear the sounds it makes and they say "no wonder you're deaf (or confused)" but it's not from the GT. I'm making some other purchases first, but will be doing the lipo battery thing to the GT as well. Once again, welcome to the forum, keep us posted, and post some pics of your finds if you can.

Using a lipo battery alone will drop a good bit of weight from the machine, especially compared to the rechargeable pack. I'm using 3 cell 750ma Rhinos in mine. Although that's lower capacity than the 1000ma rechargeable pack, I am getting as long or longer run times. Reason being that a lipo holds it's voltage high through the entire discharge, so the nimh rechargeable is likely to trip the voltage regulator cut off point sooner. Kered managed to fit I think a 1450ma lipo in his GT battery holder. You can search for him in the Modifications forum as he did pictures and a write up on both an older Sovereign and his GT in using a lipo.
