New Guy with finds and questions

Awesome forum! So I am John and I just got a BH Quick Draw 2 from my beautiful wife and I have been reading this forum to get some tips....havent had much time and we had a blizzard here in sc...but I have already found 12 pennies and an old bottle of perfume, a chain, and a some kind of stake I think unless someone thinks its something else.

Question: I see that schools, playgrounds, fair grounds etc are good places to search, I am just wondering is it just ok to walk onto a school's playground/property after hours and search? Also like fairgrounds, I live 5 minutes from the sc state fairgounds, but am I just supposed to walk out there with my gear and is that okay? I dont figure that you could get in any real trouble, but prefer to stay on the other side of the fence from the law..... just wondering if its just cool to go to a school or fairgrounds and just go at it......maybe I am thinking about it too much but I am just very excited about getting out there and finding the goods! By the way, any other tips on good places to hunt would be appreciated.

Awesome forum, thanks for any tips/info!

In Washington State and Oregon, government owned k-12 schools appear to be open however follow the rules regarding filling in holes etc. I'm not sure about post-secondary schools like colleges and universities.

Around here, the fairs are privately owned for the most part, so I think the owners of the fairs would need to be asked.

When in doubt, I suggest asking.

Howdy,
I just started detecting last year.
And I may be a little overboard , on the subject of permission, but after reading posts of the rules in different states ,
This is what I do.
First, I dont take anybodys word for anything, I go to the source, and find out myself
Second, I keep a tally book,in my detecting gear bag, in it ,I write the names and phone numbers of EVERY body that I have contacted.
And what they stated I could or could not do.
For instance, where I live ,I have permission from
National Forest
B.L.M
N.R.C.S
County (we dont have a city)
Parks dept.
Local Police
I also keep numbers of different field offices for permission, if I happen to be traveling, and want to call on the spot.

I have not been turned down to anything I want to do.
But, I dont want to take a chance on some new guy , possibly a transfer from a different city, giving me a hard time.
This way, all my ducks are in a row.
And , should it ever come to big trouble, I can prove that I have taken all the steps to know the rules and laws.
This is just me. and I tend to go overboard,
But , when I lived in Nebraska, years ago, I bought a Tesoro, and went to a beach , on a lake.
A gamewarden stopped me, said he could write me up, that it was against the law, because in the past, people left big holes.
I found out later, that he could have fined me and confiscated my detector.

I really cant afford trouble like that, these days.
So I know , before I go.

But , we each do things our own way, just my 2 cents.
Good luck Hunting.
