new guy questions

I have only had my Ace 250 for about two weeks and I have been reading posts on here for about the same time. I have a couple of questions for some of you that are more knoledgeable than myself.

1. After reading a lot of post I have seen a lot of people say "dig all targets" or something along those lines. I guess my question is this:
Does that mean to dig everytime the detector makes a noise or just on solid repeating signals? Do you dig on the signals where the cursor is skipping back and forth all over the grid or do you just dig the ones where it is jumping between to tabs like penny/dime or poptab/nickel?

I am sure I will have other questions but this one has been on my mind for a couple of days now. Thanks in advance for any answers yall can give me. I have found a lot of good information on this site and others that I have visited. Me and my wife have been finding stuff, mostly clad coins and other assorted items and we have dug our share of shredded cans and pull tabs and misc. metal stuff up. I just want to make sure I am being as effective as I can with the machine.

A place that has allot of trash can be frustrating if you are just starting,,hmmm, even if you been doing it awhile. But just starting,,,,, I say dig about everything for a bit to see how machine reads different objects. Try to note,, what is reading where.
Signals that dont repeat, and jumping around are usually trash ,,,,,or more than one object .
I usually dig every repeating signal,,even if it is jumping around for as long as I can.. If it wasnt for getting tired I would do it all the time. But I cant keep it up forever. Can then start digging the targets that read better and a occasional iffy target.

Now if Im finding some good stuff in the area, Seems I dont get as tired as fast.

Bottom line is,,learn the machine and how it reads different items and then its up to you how you feel and what to dig.
Air test it on multiple targets. Like a pull tab and a coin,, it will read a pull tab from one direction and a coin from the other. That is why its a good idea to dig all.
Nothing is wrote in stone on what to dig.

Good Luck Btw,,,,I set it on custom and notch out everything below nickle, seems to work well for me. Dig,dig, dig.

:usaflag:If you are looking for relics AND coins I would say dig everything. I'm always thinking that I am cheating myself by not digging the bouncy targets, but I have only found coins when it is a solid coin hit. One of these days I'm going to start digging the "iffy" signals just to see what is there.

Welcome to the forum youll enjoy it!!

This is my 2nd yr :detecting:and im
far from experiened but id say dig everything
and try to learn the machine ...

Good luck

Some folks dig everything that produces signals. In the old days that was your only choice. If you use the "twitch" on those bouncing targets many will turn into good targets.

:usaflag:Yes...the "twitch" has worked several times. But it's more likely to be a rusty nail unfortunately.

Wow does that sound familiar. Got a good chuckle out of that.

I agree i dig a lot also being new to metal detecting. I have found my fair share of pull tabs and junk also. I found a pbr beer can at 6 inches with the machine set in the coin mode now how did that happen? In this case i think the ground is so trashy i cant figure that one out. I used to hunt with a whites classic sl and i like the ace 250 it shows whats in the ground before you dig. I cant believe what the 2500 will do to me thats incredible but i would not pay that much for a detector thats a little to rich for me along with the etrac machine. Iam sure these are great machines but my wallet is not fat
