If money is no problem then by all means, get an M6 or MXT. If your just looking to get your feet wet, not spend allot and see if you like the hobby before you dive in then I suggest you get a Classic ID or even and IDX Pro. Both great detectors and with excellent depth. Also leaves some cash for probe, digger, finds pouch etc. You can pick one up used from one of the forums and if you enjoy it and stick with it you should be able to sell them for about what you paid (sometimes more) and then upgrade.

i bought a used XLT for my first machine, turned it to coin/jewelry ground balanced it and started hunting.

just saying it was easy to use and still have plenty to learn to, meaning it will be hard to outgrow. It was easy enough I bought my wife one to hunt with.
My only complaint is in competition hunts it can get a little heavy by the end of the day.:pulltab:

Liked my M-6 so well I traded my other detector for another M-6!! Easy to use and great for the money..I've had 6 detector last year from midpriced to top of the heap... the M-6 tones are great way to hunt..
