Ok I am new at this but very interested in this hobby. I asked for and received an ace 250 for Christmas. I have heard they are decent for a starter and you are not out much if you don't continue the hobby. I am not sure if anyone would allow me to tag along and perhaps teach me how to get started. All I have so far is the metal detector. what are the other essentials I will need to have a successful hunt? Perplexed in pekin

Hi, and welcome to the forum and the fun of metal detecting. First off, you will need a digging tool. I use a small whites digger many use a Lesche digger. I prefer the digger since it fits in my back pocket better. We would love to have you join in our PATH events. We have quite a few members from Pekin as well. Then you would be able to learn how to retrieve targets without damaging the soil much at all. That's the way we dig. We have a few members with the ACE 250 also.

Stay warm and HH,
Nancy

PS: I moved your post so others would be more apt to see it.

Welcome to the hobby. These guys have taught me a lot in the last six months.

Thank you much. Please let me know when the next path event takes place. I will start researching a digging tool.

Hello new guy! Welcome! Besides a solid digger (be sure to get one that will not bend to much, even wet ground will bend a cheaply built digger) you may want to consider saving up for a Garret pinpointer also, about $125 last I checked. After you go out a few times and if you decide you really like the hobby those things can really be a time saver. They help pinpoint the small object's in the hole or plug after you dig. And believe me that can take up a lot of time, even with the pinpointer occasionally.
Most meetings are last Wed. of month. Will be posted here.
Good luck!

Our next meeting will be the last Wednesday of the month, Jan. 29. Peoria Public Library North @ 6:30. Would love to see you there, Nancy

Nope, just bring yourself. Friends or family are welcome also. Hope to see you there!
