I just wanted to wave a hand and say hello and share my story :)

I received my Bounty Hunter 505 on Tuesday 6/14. Watched the DVD and played with the 505 settings for a few minutes in the yard just to get a feel for it. Wednesday 6/15 after work, watched the video again then loaded the 505 into the car with my wife and daughter and headed to a local bird sanctuary for a trial run. My daughter fell in love with the fact we could find money lol. After a short few minutes the 505 was going off. Dug up a 1964 penny. We filled the hole after explaining to my daughter how important it is to leave the area just as we found it. (Had a bounty hunter Tracker IV a few years back and know a little about this hobby) Our next hit was a 1946 nickle and then it was a few more pennies and a couple of dimes. It was a great first time out with the 505. We only spent 45 minutes or so but it was still very enjoyable.

I am hoping to get out tomorrow a.m. (if weather allows me).

Here are our finds

Way to go.

How old is your daughter? Is she old enough to swing a full sized detector? If not then the BH Jr. would be a fun gift to get her. I have one and have to say it is not a toy but really does work. Since 90% of what I find is within 4" of the surface, the Jr. would find those targets too.

For digging I use an Ames Garden Buddy from Lowes. They cost about $8 I think and do t totally excellent job. I use Harbor Freight pin pointers and they work very well for the price... $15 or so.

So again, congratulations and go out there and have fun.

Mark

My daughter is 9. I think she can swing a full size MD. I am going to let her swing mine with in the next few trips out. My wife and I are going to see if she takes a liking to MDing and if so for Christmas I plan on getting her the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV .

For digging I use the Sawtooth Gator Digger 1500 from kellyco. It came with my 505 and only used it 12 or so times but it seems to do a good job. I have been looking at the Harbor Freight pin pointer. ( I have to let things rest with the wife before I buy any more stuff lol )

Congrats on your finds and your Daughter's Interest

Glad to see that you've taken up the hobby again, I'm sure you and your daughter will have tons of fun, best of luck to you, hope to see you posting pics of some amazing finds soon! HH!

Hello RDWHAHB,
I saw your comment about your 505, so I'm dropping you a line to ask a question about your settings. I just got a 505 and I'm new to metal detecting. I was wondering what your typical setting is for coin hunting in the parks. Mine has alot of false tones. The manual and a sticker says to dial back the sensitivity. It seems I have to dial back to almost the lowest setting to get it to stop the random signal tones. I've been running it in Disc at half way to eliminate the iron. If I move real slow and I mean slow, I can keep the sensitivity at 2 o'clock position as the video recommended. However, if I swing at a consistent sweep I get the intermediate false tones/beeps. Additionally, I have the stock 8" coil and I've been searching the parks in Coeur d'Alene, ID. It maybe the minerals in the area, but at this time I'm not able to take it anywhere else to try it. I thought it might be a common thing with the 505, because they put a sticker instruction on the machine.

If you have a moment to reply and tell me how your MD is that would be great. I'd appreciate any advice on the unit.
Thank you, Ski

Ski,

I'm not sure if I can help you out :(. I am still very green with this machine but I run it on DISC and run it on the settings on the dvd. I really haven't played with the settings all that much. I do get a LOT of readings of scrap (like you i think that it is maybe minerals?). I have learned to tell what I be leave are false/minerals readings and what are good readings. I mean I have never had a reading of a coin or a pull tab etc.and dug a hole and found nothing. When I get a reading of IRON/FOIL (witch I get A LOT) I just keep on sweeping. I am getting a good feel for it enough where I am going to start to play with the sensitivity and disc soon. Right now I am just having fun and enjoying the thrill of finding coins ect.

Sorry if I'm not much of help. Maybe some one with better experience with the 505 will chime in.

RDWHAHB,
Thank you for the quick response. I'll continue to research to see if the machine has a problem. I'm not the original owner, so I don't know the history. The guy I got it from said he bought it new to find the water main to his house and its been sitting on a self since. I didn't ask him how long ago that was. Its working and I've found 2 rings and about $3 in clad coins. But I'm running on the lowest sensitivity. If I turn it up I get a lot of beeps and tones. I thought about trying the 4" coil to see if I get a different performance.
Again thank you for the reply.
Happy hunting, Ski
