New guy here with a question

Hi all! This is my first post. I am 23, and have lurked here off and on over the past couple of years I think. Metal detecting coins/relics has always been something that I have been mildly interested in. My dad loves coin/relic hunting and knows more about the county we live than people that have lived here their entire lives, because of his research (he moved here when he was 18, now 45.).

Anyway, I have finally gotten the bug and am searching for my own detector, because as we all know; you can only watch for so long haha. My dad has the original Eldorado that he bought roughly 20 years ago, I think. It is a great detector, and has given him many great finds.

Well, since it is no longer made, and I prefer to buy new, I have been looking at Tesoro's current lineup. I am leaning towards the Tejon. It looks, from the research I have done, to be a good detector. I am in the upstate of South Carolina, but this would also be used in NC, TN, MI, and probably many other states over time. So, my question is this, would I be making the right move by purchasing this model? I plan on working parks, battlefields, and just about anywhere that I see the chance. Any suggestions or advice is always welcomed. I am looking forward to contributing and sharing in here much more in the future. Thanks.

a mighty fine detector. I've been at this hobby since 1968 and before that without a detector (treasure hunter).

I've put about 300 hours on a Tejon and it's one sweet machine. You won't go wrong with the Tejon.

Like with your dad's detector, Tesoro is still a slow swing machine.

I've tried many brands but keep coming back to Tesoro.

I personally think the Tejon is the best buy today in non-TID (meter) VLF machines. Ajustable ground balance in discrimination mode is important for consistant depth.

There are some more expensive detectors that may be deeper but depth isn't everything. Tesoro has always had that wonderful target separation and smooth sound that sets it apart. With Tesoro the good targets are usually easy to tell.

Glad you've decided to get into this wonderful hobby.

Great post:detecting:

You need a machine "better" than your dads, and the Tejon is the one that can do it. Light weight, easy to use, great depth, life time warranty. What more could ask for?

Hey Michigan Badger, why not Michigan Wolverine? Are you a transplant from Wisconsin?

No, actually I got the name years ago from another member at TreasureNet. At that time one of my ID's was "Minelab." This was back before Minelab detectors were widely accepted at TreasureNet. Back then I got laughed at for using one! haha

Anyway, one day I posted a picture of a large area I was digging up and a member posted that I "dug like a badger." The name got spread around and a few started calling me badger. I left TreasureNet for a while for business reasons and when I returned I took the ID of Michigan Badger. I'll most likely have it now no matter where I live.

Well, sorry you brought it up? haha!

I got the Cibola then the following month I got the Tejon. When I use a Tesoro, I'll use the Cibola for a quick short local hunt. For the longer hunts I'll use the Tejon. I liked the Cibola so I then went to add the Tejon. They worked better than I expected - no regrets. Right afterwards I got the 5.75 concentric coil, then later the 5.75 widescan. On my last relic hunt another high end machine I tried wasn't cutting it since the area was just loaded with trash. Both my partner with his high dollar machine and I wanted to give up. So I pulled out the Tesoro's with the smaller coils. This made a big difference so we were able to work the area and we did get some finds. Saved the day on an out of town trip - and the Tesoro's = :bouncy:

The Tejon will require a little getting to know, but should do nicely. The dual mode DISC is like the older 1266-X, which you may have heard of. For "cruising" style detecting, it is a good feature. I used my old "X" model for years as primary.

You dont hear much about the Tejon as being an all-around model - its usually relics or nothing. But if you consider even a clad dime as a relic, the Tejon begins to take on a new look.

Thanks for the info everyone. I will most likely purchase it, once I get the money saved up. I sure do miss the days when I had no responsibility and could just frivolously blow my money, haha. Thanks again.

still is a good unit, nut ....
