If I'm going to go silent search I'd pick up a GoldStrike. A little lower on the frequency but you'll at least some iron id and a darn good tracking system. I just bought a new one for 300 bucks. I don't know if they are going to be discounting the GMZ that cheap.

Here's a bit more skinny on the new GMZ.

First, it's a silent search machine, no threshold available.
Second, no iron ID. All metal, all the time.
Third, 50 Kz, just like all the rest of the Goldmasters
Forth, yep, just three controls.

On/off and gain are the same control. Turn it up about half way to start.
Ground balance - set the loop on the ground and turn it up until it starts to chatter. Turn it down a bit until there is no sound from the ground. Adjust the gain again until it is smooth, no sound except from metal targets.
Toggle switch - Normal ground or Salt.
Standard 9x5 DD loop, same as the GMT.

I've played with it a bit in the yard, but not in the field yet. I used it to clean out all the metal trash from my test garden. Yes, it's sensitive to all those tiny bits of gold, just like the Goldmasters. I don't know yet how it responds to hot rocks or highly changing ground. The depth is comparable to the GMT. There is no V-Sat, auto tune, or boost. Just a simple, straightforward, lightweight, all metal detector.

History - About 8 years ago, Dan Geyer, Whites engineer, designed this little machine in his spare time for himself to use. He didn't think it would fit in Whites line, and at the time, neither did Whites. He used it to find a butt load of small gold at a still secret site in Northern Nevada. Several of us dealers tested it and liked it since it's much easier to learn and use than a GM. But Whites didn't think it would fly, due to the success of the GMT at the time. Since then there has been a "changing of the guard" at Whites, and it came off the shelf, literally. We played with it again and decided that there was a notch for it since it was priced well under the GMT and the TDI. It has only been out to dealers for about 3 weeks so it has not hit the mainstream yet. As such it's not on any official web sites yet either.

I have one in stock now and will see if I can post some pictures if anyone is interested. Oh yeah, the price is $479.95 I voted for $449.95 but was outvoted :-(

It's motion all metal. Slow motion, but still you need to move the loop just like the Goldmasters. It really pops on a 1 grain piece. Not much depth on something that small but you'll hear it. Not quite the same zip - zip as the GMs, more like a pop. I'll see if I can post a picture tomorrow.

Hi Mike,

Well, whenever you add used detectors into the mix comparisons get kind of impossible. I'd surely buy a used Goldmaster II for $250 myself before I'd buy a GMZ.

The silent search thing is because the unit is not targeting old pros. It is for people who can't make heads or tails of the faint noises a finely tuned threshold produces. The unit is silent, and when it beeps, you dig. And at 50 kHz it beeps on some pretty small stuff.

Well I bought a GMZ and UPS delivered it yesterday. Today I took the GMZ up to one of my mining claims and played with it for about an hour and a half. It was too hot to stay any longer. It sure is weird running a nugget detector without a threshold. I never tried a Fisher Gold Striker, so I can't say anything about a comparrison.
This particular claim has pretty hot ground and loads of black sand in the washes. The ground noise went away at 61/2 on the ground balance. There were a few large basalt type rocks that would sound off, but all the small hot rocks were not detected. I could run the gain at max most of the time. I have pounded this area before, so I didn't expect to find any nuggets and I didn't. I used a small #8 lead bird shot as a test piece to see how the GMZ would respond. It would hit it, but It ain't a GMT or a GB2.

B.T, do you mean the brand new silent search Whites GMZ gold machine will be noisy to use OR do you mean the opposite as it will do a good job of combating noisy ground and is better than a threshold machine ??

Hi David. The GMZ does work, but like any machine that does not have SAT control you are at the mercy of its set recovery speed in real bad ground. Id like to see it with a wider ground balance, ten turn, as I never could understand why you would put a limited 1 turn on a machine that will potentially be used in ground that has wide variations in mineralisation such as typical goldfields do! But, it is aimed at the entry level budget market and I suppose if you go and do all that you then have to raise the price taking it out of that range and defeat the purpose of it all. So yeah, it works in many places ok but in real variable ground it is left wanting a wider balance range and screaming out for a SAT. Cant bag it for what it is though as it is pretty punchy for a cheap machine.
