new gold bug pro NOT impressed

finally got to try out my new gold bug pro with 5x10 coil today.as soon as i got within 100 feet of any power lines it goes crazy, even turning the sensitivity down to 50.only when i got out in the field i could turn it up to 100 and it was quiet.seemed like every target i got when i hit pinpoint it said depth 0,and most of my targets were 4 inches or less but more then 0.last before i left i dug a hole about 7 inches deep and put a quarter in it,left the dirt out and ran over it with 100 sens, disc 40 and got nothing.i finally just barely got a signal at a measured 5-1/2 inches.shouldnt i get more then that on a quarter?am i doing something wrong?it was properly ground balanced at 64.

How does it work away from the power lines?

If you think about it 5 to 6" with a 5" coil is not bad. The 10" length really has no bearing on the depth. I get a good 6" on a dime with mine but it only gets the same 6" on a quarter in disc.
Go to all metal and i get a honest 8" on the dime and quarter maybe a little more for the quarter but not much which i think is great for a 5" coil. I get the same results with the round 5" coil.
One thing that really helps is the use of good headphones with properly adjusted volume. The responce of the GB to silver is a lower softer tone than the other Fisher machines. For that reason a good set of headphones will give you some extra depth .I feel safe in saying a good inch by being able to hear the faint sounds of silver when the depth starts getting past 5" when in Disc. mode.

No problem when in all metal up to 8" in my soil which is mild.
I have a CZ3D that wont meet those numbers with a 5" coil in any mode.

I have only had the GB a couple of days so you can take this info. for what ever you may think its worth.

What does it get on a nickel?

hi guys, thanks for the replies.first it is quiet away from power lines but that is where i only got 5-1/2 inches on a quarter.i use grey ghost headphones so i can hear the faint signals.i havent tried a nickel yet but ill do some more testing when i have time.i just figured it would go a little deeper because of all the post saying the 5x10 is only about an inch less depth then the 11".

I've run at approx 95% sens under power lines also with no problems. If TNYANKEE74 has problems within 100 feet of a power line, maybe you should have a chat with the power company. I'm no electronics/electrical techie, but there's such a thing as power transmission harmonics, and it may be producing a very great amount of EMI in your area.

Very interesting thought Hobbyist & one that I had never considered before.-----The first thing that comes to my mind is to go to a whole different area under some power lines & see what the results are there.-----I have run my GB Pro under power lines everywhere at right at max sensitivity & have never had any real problems with EMI.------There's always the possibility that the gentleman has something wrong with his detector.----In any case, I would want to get to the bottom of this as these GB's are sweet, quiet running little mammas.----I get plenty adequate depth with mine in any situation.--------Del

There are defiantly some power lines that are worse than others and at certain times of the day worse than normal. In Placervillle ca at the fair grounds there are areas that you cant hunt at more than 50 % and areas I cant hunt at all.

The Other thing Ive noticed is when I'm hunting around etracs or explorers they effect my unit I have to get way away to function properly.
One explorer user was about 200 feet away looking the other direction when I walked on the Field and turned on the Gold bug, He turned around and looked straight at me and came over.
He had to ask what I was using because he had to noise cancel me from that far away. He said he never had another unit do this to his. Seems weird but he did literally turn around when I flipped my power on.
I know these units run smooth but if you flip to all metal and set your gain to max in a emi area you will hear it, That emi is still there in disc with my headphones I can hear it in the back ground.
Sometimes its better to set your gain in all metal just to the point of instability and hunt at that setting. You will get better performance not fighting the emi.

i did try it out in my yard for about 10 mins and could run it at 100 sens and under the power lines.so i guess it might just be that house.one of these days when i get a day off ill bury some coins in my yard and see how the depth compares to the other place.

Two things -- one, for me, the 5x10 gets quite a bit less depth, in my soil, than the 11". Even in an air test, though, the 5x10 is NOT "only an inch" less than the 11". That being said, I can get better than 5 1/2" on an in-ground quarter with my 5x10...but it depends on soil. If your soil is REALLY bad/mineralized, you may not achieve the same results as others. Also, if you are near an EMI source, this can affect depth -- sometimes significantly. I think if your soil in your yard is not too badly minearlized, and you bury a quarter at 7", you should hit it with your 5x10. Let us know...

Its a gold detector, hi freq. designed to find low conductors like gold, try it on a nickle. If you want to look for dimes & quarters get a lower freq. detector.

I have the 3 version, I bought it mostly for nugget hunting

Based on several posts you have made, I'm guessing you have the 2.9 version? The 4.0 version of the Gold Bug Pro does a surprisingly good job on dimes and quarters, especially with the 11" DD...

An empty hole creates a problem for many detectors, even the F75. The machine is ground balanced to the ground, but when you sweep over an open hole the ground is missing and the machine might not see the coin as you discribed. I've found many coins hunting behind others who lost the target once they removed the plug. Next time try replacing the plug over the coin and you'll see the difference. I basically have no problem with EMI unless I'm out 50 yards from the power lines, directly under the lines is a lot better place to be.

well with working 2 jobs and getting only 1 day off in 2 weeks i finally got to do some tests.i went out in my yard, found a clean spot and ground balanced to 73.i have a powerline that runs right over the front of my yard but could crank it up to 100.i cut a plug and measured 8 inches down.i had a quarter, dime, nickel, and penny to test.plug was put back in after every coin change.8 inches nothing,7 inches nothing,6 inches nothing,5 inches could get a whisper on all but vdi jumping from 1 to upper 80's.i wanted to see where i would get a vdi that would lock on and looks about 2-3 inches max.did a little detecting after the tests and noticed with it laying on the ground it could be dead quiet and then all of a sudden start chattering with the vdi jumping all over and sounding like a machine gun going off.so i dont know if there is something wrong with it or what.any ideas?this was with the 5x10 coil and sens set to 50 before ground balancing then to 100 after.

I have three different software versions of the bug now and all perform much better than that. 8 inch nickel no problem in my tests even at 50 % power on my version 2 with saturated audio.
I would say you have a problem either with the unit or headphones or something does it do as poorly in all metal?
