new forum member with new 705...... coil question???

New member
i just joined the forum and i've had the 705 for a few months now with the 10.5"DD 7.5khz coil on it. my question is, has anybody ever done a depth comparison of it verses the 9"CC 3khz coil on silver/clad? the reason i ask is because i've pretty much given up on finding anything gold because so much of it reads like trash that every time i dig anything below 30, it's trash. ( except 12 which i learned can be a nickel but even then it's 50/50 at best) my thought is, with that being the case, i might as well just go for deep silver/clad which they say the 3khz is best for. obviously the 9" coil is smaller but does the lower khz make up for it, or would it pretty much be a wash and not worth buying the coil for that reason? thanks for any response, mike.

Hope this helps.

1. If you go anywhere that people gather you are going to find trash. A lot of it! When you think about how many pull tabs and foil caps, etc are tossed on the ground instead of in the garbage then factor in how few rings are lost its isn't any big surprize that you could spend all day digging thousands of targets and not find jewelry. However, if you want to be a jewelry hunter then this is what you have to tolerate.
2. Don't get too hung up on frequencies. If there is a coin or other good target under that coil you're going to find it. Do certain frequencies prefer certain metals? You bet! But it isn't like because you're using an 18.75 kHz coil it will skip over an old silver coin. Your coil choice might be better suited to ground mineralization and whether a DD or concentric will do a better job.
3. Learn your machine. Don't get discouraged if you're not finding tons of stuff...yet.

Just so you know also, I have the 9" 7.5, 10.5" 18.75 and 6" Digger. When I grab one or the other I never think about which frequency I'm going to use. I like each one equally but seem to use the 10.5" more often. In one hunt recently I found 6 mercs and a Rosie with it. The mercs were in the 6 inch range and were as loud as if they were an inch down.
Good luck with whatever you use.

I'm still learning lso, but I hunt in some very trashy spots, so I have just ordered the 6" coil for better separation of targets. I would say that the best advice I have gotten so far is to slow down. It helps a lot to determine whether to dig that signal or not.

Geez, I just realized that I think my 10.5" is MF coil. Guess it shows how much I pay attention to what I use.

I like the 10.5 MF for jewelry, but I would having found 2 gold rings in the first few wks I had it. I like the 9 inch 7.5 CC coil also for the moderate ground where I hunt a lot.The 10.5 will work also in moderate ground areas but is heavier. To hunt rings you will have to dig some trash, but I don't tackle tin can piles to hunt. Use sports fields, volley ball courts, beaches, where people lose rings. I also hunt playgrounds a lot. Don't lose faith in finding jewelry, I just came off a 2 year drought broken by the 705. Good luck and be patient, you will succeed. HH

thanks to everyone for the advice and info.
i would have got back sooner but i just got home from some night digging which produced a bunch of stinkn lincns'. they were reading 36 like dimes instead of the usual 32. don't know what was up with that but they're not in the ground anymore. i never realized how handy the light on the pin pointer would be until it got dark and i kept digging.

thanks again to all,

mike.
