New/First E-Trac

New member
I've been detecting for a couple years now, quite often, and after cruising around with and ace 350 I finally upgraded to an E-Trac. I did a lot of research and whatnot so I feel pretty comfortable with the settings. I did purchase it from a local store, Cabelas, and they have a 30 day return policy, so I'd like to solve this before its to late. I hunt in primarily trashy rural areas, and my E-trac is going crazy all the time if there is anything in the ground at all, even with the sensitivity around 15(Manual). Is this normal? Am I just not used to how much surface area and depth it actually covers? Or is something wrong with it? I've browsed around the net and found loooooots of videos of people digging and scanning their hole before they dig it, but could not find any videos of guys wandering around in between digs so that I can hear what theirs sounds like? Does anyone have a link to a video like what I described? Would anyone be so kind to upload a video of them in trashy areas? Any input is appreciated, thanks for reading guys! I promise if you guys can get me up and running, I'll try and entertain you with some really nice finds! (Hopefully!!!:))

Use the default coin mode and keep it in auto instead of manual and see if the chattering stops and make sure you do a noise cancel
because you might be near some electromagnetic interference.

Thanks for the fast response! I've tried auto, auto+3, auto-3 and everything in-between without any luck. The "Minelab" coin mode gives me problems as well. I also do the automatic noise cancel each time I turn on the detector, should I be manually putting it into a specific channel? Or is automatic sufficient? Maybe tomorrow I'll have a friend record a video of what it doing and I'll upload it to hopefully aid in remedying the problem.

Any channel will do after you do a noise cancel. Are you using new rechargeable batteries or a battery pack.
If you have a bad battery or a bad battery pack or a bad contact connection between your batteries that could cause a problem.
Also, the coil or the coil connection might be bad. I'm only suggesting these ideas for the process of elimination.

You seem to be making efforts to correct the situation
I feel your pain, it happened to me but having such "chatter" in auto +3 is not expected
Any chance you can send a SOS out on forum and find an experienced Etrac user in your area
Having someone next to you showing you what it should do, etc would be invaluable
And perhaps there is a problem with your machine and it can easily be remedied
But the Etrac is amazing and I hope you get to see that soon

1. Try doing a master reset and see if that takes care of the problem (page 79 of your manual). 2. Switch to the AA battery pack to see if it makes a difference. 3. Get your hands on another coil to see if you have the same problem. 4. Maybe you just got unlucky and got a bad one! Hope it's an easy fix!

Hi Trey,

I have video of me just wandering around and calling out signals....unfortunately I haven't loaded it up yet, though almost every video I do have uploaded has a FULL dig so you hear the target.

In short I believe something is wrong with your machine or coil. It shouldn't do that constantly. Good news is - if you can call it that- that Minelabs service seems to have stablilized and we are hear a lot less complaints about their turnarounds and in fact more praises. So that should help.

Please let us know what you've found out.

is the etrac new or second hand you have had alot of good advice so far check that the coil wire is tightly fitted at coil end and open up shaft and make sure wire to coil is also fitted correctly at the top as it goes into the computer end i do hope you get this sorted as the etrac is an amazing machine keep talking to us with any update

I had this happen to me today at a park I was hunting. Did your area have power lines, a cell tower, an airport, sprinklers or buried cables anywhere nearby? Mine went CRAZY for a while tonight and I traced it back to buried cable. Once I got far enough away from it, everything settled down again and ran as usual. If you are having this problem, regardless of location, I think there's something going on with it. Anywhere near a cell tower, airport, power lines, sprinklers or buried cable seems to be a no-go with mine. My ET runs very smoothly and its very rare for mine to go crazy on me, unless the above mentioned is nearby. Also, check under your coil cover, I've had a tiny piece of something get trapped under mine and it made me scratch my head for a bit until I took a closer look and removed my cover and cleaned it. Hope you figure it out and otherwise, go back to Cabela's, trade it for another one, and give that a shot. I hope you figure it out, please let us know what you find. All the above advice was really good too, give all that a try. Good luck! -Marc

hmm....so youre saying that in a very junky spot the etrac is giving all kinds of readings......that is normal.....if it is much less chatty in "clean" areas. if it seems to be working normally in "clean" areas such as front yards of homes then there is probably nothing wrong with it. it also depends on how much of the FE you have blacked out on your discrimination pattern. if you have a lot of the FE blacked out then you should also be hearing a lot of nulling. its hard to say without using it first hand.

Good post moonshine, I agree with everything you said. One more thing I would add is the importance of "noise cancel." I know a lot of users don't use this function as much as they should, and others don't use it at all. I NC at the beginning of every hunt and every time I notice my machine is doing anything "strange." This usually means I NC several times every time I hunt. I can't imagine how people hunt without regular NC. Maybe its just necessary in MY common hunting spots, but I absolutely would not be able to hunt my regular spots without NC'ing at least a couple/few times. I hope you figure it out. This truly is a great machine, given that you truly have a fully functional one. I also suggest you run it in "auto" for a while longer. Switching to manual can make your machine more unstable if you don't know it well enough. Run it in auto with the stock coin program, with regular NC for a few hunts and let us know what your experience is. If you are still having problems, you may just have been unlucky enough to receive a "bad" unit. I'm no expert, but I hunt in plenty of very trashy sites, and my experience is completely different from yours. HH -Marc

Thanks everyone for the input, I got fed up with trying to figure out what was going on with the machine. Took it back to Cabelas, they got a new one for me from their stock in back no questions asked. Tried the new one out earlier today after downloading some patterns/modes, works fantastically! Had to of been something wrong with the coil or a connector. Now to follow up with my promise of finding some good loot to show you guys!
