New Finny?

Anyone heard of a NEW finny with a couple of upgrades..... like doing away with the hi-lo? I know there is always a hope or wish list, but someone mentioned it to me since i was looking at a finny for water hunting.

Garrett already has updated the Infinium by way of the Garrett RECON-PRO AML-1000 mine detector. Personally I find it irritating that a civilian version (Infinium 2) has not yet been offered to us. We're it not for hobbyists Garrett would never have got off the ground but now it seems the security and military applications get priority. The AML-1000 has single instead of dual tones and purportedly can handle salt water better, both features I think the Infinium would really benefit from. Both are reasons why i no longer have an Infinium and if added would be reason for me to get a new one. I am not holding my breath though.

I wouldn't complain about bigger battery and more power also - get more in line with GPX - of course that would be more dollars also

The HI/LO tone of the Infinium is part of its heart and soul and is the means by which, along with the Rev Disc, it IDs gold from iron in gold field conditions.
If you donot want or need that feature then go for the Sea Hunter

The idea is not to get rid of tones but to get rid of the hi-lo or lo-hi. Instead just a hi tone or just a lo tone.

In very thick trash the doubling of signals gets oppressive. Not a problem where signals are few and far between.

Hmmmmmmm??
Interesting comment Steve.

I find the Hi/Lo or Lo/Hi help identify real targets from EMI or small trash signals. Same goes for the drawn out signals.
Just my opinion.

Hello Steve,

I agree, a single (high or low) tone feature on the Infinium II will be a warm welcome especially in trashy areas. Helps the user focus on targets quickly pick and choose targets from trashy areas, I find the single tone feature on the Garrett Recon-AML 1000 easier to hunt trashy fresh water lakes.

One would think a fresh water lake would have less mineralizition compared to ocean water, here in my area of California some of our foot hill lakes and rivers can not get maximum penetration unless using a Pi the black sand is extreamly terrible. Even the Explorers, Excaliburs and other top models dont come close to getting the depth

I was disappointed last fall when the time came for new announcements for new machine releases, came and went, and there were none from Garrett. Obviously Steve is right, Garrett has gone industrial and catering to security. The dual tone is a bother at times but does sort of have a disc affect for high/low conductor targets. I just hate the overload drawn out scream from those buried aluminum cans and large iron stuff. I just want to say, "SHUT UP"! As it is tho, I wouldn't trade my Finny for anything - not even a ML machine. With the mods I've done to my Finny (straight shaft, rear extension for under cuff mount of box and the purchase of 8 mono) it is one sweet toll for hunting. I'll make due till Garrett wakes up. Damned those old timers and their tin cans! oooouch, my ears! "SHUT UP"!

Wow Steve, your posts were a big part of my decision to purchase the Infinium and now I see that you no longer have or use it. If you dont mind my asking, what happened that turned you off the finny?

Everyone started calling it the Finny. Too cutsie for me so I had to move on.

Seriously, time moves on, and the Infinium is an old model. I want an Infinium 2. The Infinium is a good detector for a first effort, but it needs a followup taking into account all we know now. The Infinium has had noise issues, both from being borderline too hot for salt water, and EMI issues. I want a more stable platform. I have run several different Inifiniums in Hawaii, and they have all worked but been work, if you know what I mean. Not a pleasure to use, more like trying to bend the detector to my will.

Garrett already has a second generation Infinium out, marketed as a mine detector called the Recon. It addresses a couple issues I have with the Infinium, but to my dismay Garrett seems in no hurry to offer it to me in an Infinium box.

I need a new waterproof PI by next winter. If nothing better comes out I may well get another Infinium. But honestly, I am hoping Garrett or somebody else does something better by then. At least one other manufacturer has something in the works. So I am waiting.

Sorry Steve ~ I'm the one who coined the name 'Finny". It just seemed abbreviated for Discussion. I've been wondering why U had dropped it, as well.
I agree with You on some of the other issues & respect your experience ~ I dont really think it needs the Dual-tone either just the low predominant or Hi.
Didn't really figure the terminology would drive U off (being a die-hard) - but the rest of it makes some sense

Ha, Ken, I do hope you know I was joking about the name! And nothing really drove me off the Infinium. My focus shifts around. For me it is really a water detector, and I have not done much of that lately. I hope to see some warm water next winter and that is why I need an underwater PI again by next winter. I admit though to not being brand loyal and doing what I can to push all manufacturers as an avid user whenever I can to improve. I would love to see an Infinium II.

I knew U were just messin' Steve, I'm glad Your here & others ~ Fishers Ghost, ivanll & Several others helped Me Decide for the Money to go with the Infinihumm a while back with No regrets. I'm still learning it & Lobo for their capabilities and Especially Mine. I enjoy the ongoing process because I'm not a long timer in Detecting, Ken

Hi, any chance you could scan the instruction manual and post on line. Bought one of these on ebay but got no instructions.

The Recon Pro was tried here in Aussie for a short while and it apparently crashed and burned in the gold fields. It had stability and drifting issues and was not good in the high iron minerals.
It is a trendy looking Mine detector.
I still have my Infinium and will not be parting with it any time soon. I have yet to find ground conditions where it does not work well.
The Tesoro Sand Shark has taken over from the Infinium for my beach detecting. The SS is not as powerfull as the Infinium but it is lighter and much easier to set up and start detecting and is very sensitive to small jewellery and coins in wet sand. On par with the Sea Hunter although the Sea hunter does have some discrimination. The SS does not have EMI cancelling ability and can be rendered useless under some EMI conditions.

There is no question that if I want to find very deep long lost stuff at the beach or anywhere else then the Infinium is what I use..... Yes those low/high tones can be annoying but I am used to them now.
If you listen to the GPXs you will hear high and low tones depending on target conductability.
