Went through the manual and most of 'Mastering the Explorer S & XS" I think I've got the gist of what I need to do to set up my programs. I know that there are folks on here with a lot of hours under their belts with this machine. All tips from the veterans would be greatly appreciated. I was toying around with it this afternoon in the back yard and seemed to have trouble locking on (visually and audio) to targets. The back yard is a little trashy so that might be the reason. Hope to hear all the great ideas you guys have and I hope to be posting some awesome finds pretty soon.

Being new to the machine it is best to run in the preset start up mode if you are not there then just hold the on button a few seconds when you start it up and it will take you back to it.

Once there you can push the middle button on the left side to put in manual sens but leave at 16 to 18 for a bit (16 in my bad ground still gets IH at 8 inches)

You can hit the iron mask button and set it to around -12, hunt in the disc pattern of the startup and when you think you might have an ok target you can switch to the Iron mask it will lock on a little better.

You need to hunt this way for a good 40 or so hours that way your ear can be trained on what to listen for (tones first then visual).

You definately need to hunt with iron mask on and anything -12 or lower, this will quiet your machine down quite a bit. I run mine at -6 if it gets too noisy. I still find things that make me smile.
