New Explorer II

redclay

New member
ordered a new explorer II and a 8" excelerator concentric searchcoil
does anyone know how well they do in georgia red clay and which coil is the best to use on the deep coins. Getting it Friday and can't hardley wait.new to minelab and need all the help I can get.
Thanks, Dave

In trashy areas, use smaller coils, in clean areas, use the larger. I love my 8" coil, because it seems to do well in most conditions. Take your time and learn the machine (as I am doing now LOL), and leave it in DEFAULT settings till you get comfortable with it. Swing SLOW! Practice pinpointing, it is VERY accurate once you get it down. Practice in a non-trashy place your first battery or two. Save up for a Sunray Probe!!! LOL

Thanks Travis I will give it a try.
I have a fisher CZ70 pro and it is very deep but it loves the rusty nails. I have heard good things about the explorer so I figured I'd try one.

I dont claim to be an expert. Ive only had my XS about a month. Ive used it maybe 8 times. I have a 1266 and a Coin Strike. I used to have a CZ6. The Minelab Explorer is the best detector Ive ever used.

It makes a lot of weird sounds but it finds stuff for sure. My first time out with it was to a site I hunted all day with my C$. Its an old house site loaded with iron. I dug lots of iron junk and only got one good button. The C$ was making such a racket I couldnt buy a good target. I went back with the XS and got about 5 good buttons, a gold ring, and lots of misc brass stuff and hardly any iron in a few hours. A lot of people dont do as well there first time out with it though so stick with it.

I hit a red clay site near Culpeper last weekend and all though I found stuff I was a bit disappointed with the detector not being able to hold a threshold without turing the strength to semi-auto. I was using the stock 10.5 inch coil. I just went to a site today that I had a bit of problems with holding a threshold using the 10.5 inch coil so I used my 8 inch Double D this time. It worked much better. I think Ill try that next time I hunt in mineralized soil. I got 5 bullets in an hour and one bullet was about 9 inches with the 8 inch coil.

I know everyone says use the factory settings at first but I didnt. I started doing some reading and set it up like a lot of the experienced users do. What I did was program that into the second user. That way I could switch back if it wasnt working for me.

Good luck with it.

Man you guys are right! (very powerful machine).
I got it around 3:00 pm yesterday, watched the dvd,put it together and went out in factory preset. With in 30 minutes found a buffalo nickle.
The date was gone but still an oldie. The soil in my back yard is black about 8 or 10 inches down before it hits red clay. (old house)
I also found a 69 quarter and 71 dime. The nickle was a good 7 inches down. Love the explorer II alresdy.
Thanks for the info Bob.
Dav.

The EXll likes a slow swing too. If you are in an area with iron I would set the sounds to ferrous and not conductive. With ferrous sounds, the iron will make a low growl whereas the conductive sounds, iron most often makes a high sound due to its conductivity. Other than that don't get too fancy with all the adjustments until you get a bit comfortable with the sounds and how it reacts. I absolutely love mine!
