New Excalibur II 1000 problem buzzing. Please help

I took my new Excal II 1000 to the Jersey Shore today. First time using it. My question is after setting my threshold and other settings as I am hunting I will get a loud buzzing sound that doesn't go away unless I pass the coil over my scoop and it seems to reset the threshold. When its buzzing the Volume control has no control over the volume. Is this normal? Not sure if I have a defective unit. If I pass over a coin it beeps and resets but when this happens the loud buzzing sound stays on. Am I passing over an iron target and if so why doesn't it reset to the set threshold after moving from the target? It seems it will be annoying. Can someone help with this?. Maybe different settings? This is in discriminate mode. Thanks for your help.

This is normal. The buzz is called the threshold. You should lower it as much as you can while keeping it steady. If it starts to wobble or flutter, raise it up a little. When you go over iron it will null out(go silent) for a few seconds and then the threshold will return. The threshold will stay at the level of the last target...High for silver coins and lower tones for nickels and gold.

Make sure you read through the manual.

The Sovereigns and Excalibur's keep the tone of the last target it sees until it sees the next, if it is iron it will null out and come back at a real low tone(almost a growl for me) and normally stays there until it see the next target. Now the volume control is the target volume, not the threshold volume so it probably wont make any difference in the threshold, but try and lay a coin down and swing over it about 6 or more inches while turning the volume control is where you will see a difference.

As with the above post this is quite normal! This is also why in NJ you don't want to start out with a PI detector. You would cover only a few feet and dig enough iron that you could not carry it to the trash can! This is all in the manual that came with the detector. This is not a problem when good targets are every few feet. But since the storm there are many more pieces of iron then good targets. Your doing the correct think by just running it across the scoop to reset from the ERRRRRRR! BUT there's always a but it should not be so loud to be annoying. That is the threshold should be smooth and steady but faint, if your threshold is high enough that after a null its annoying I would think your threshold is too high. You will never be able to separate threshold from anything more that surface coins if its too high! If your out there listening for loud blaring targets for the most part you will come home with coins every time. Most good targets go pretty deep fast, gold is 9 times heavier than the other target out their. Now if your detector is going into a null more that you think it should, this is a clear sign of the Sensitivity being set too high! Too high is always bad too low is never a bad thing. If the detector is new to you you might just try Auto as it will adjust to the different sand you encounter. This detector is not set it and forget it. It requires constant adjustments to the threshold during the hunt. How long does it take to tune the Excalibur? "In a 6hr hunt certainly no more that 6hrs" (Cilve J Clynick) Also remember that the 10"DD Tornado is a large coil and puts out a large signal that requires time to adjust before you get it right! I run mine at 12 to 1 o'clock most of the time. Very rarely higher with the 10" coil.Remember that metal detectors don't punch down into the ground and find metal. They separate one noise (ground) from a different noise (target) in the Excalibur and Sovereign if that targets is iron its able to place that into a null (silence) this is how its able to iron mask and still see a good target close by and still give a good tone. Besides the information above the best advice, if you could remember one line "low and slow" steve

All is normal, my front yard...full of coins...and the garden full of Iron
