New Excalibur 1000 help needed

Just took my 1000 out of the box. All excited to charge batteries and wouldn't you know it, Wrong charger. Anyway went and got some AA batt. for back up power pack and installed them. This is where I need help. The manual states I should hear steady hum, can someone guide me with first time use of this unit. What would you recommend that the control knobs be set at for first time use? I plan to use the 1000 on the beach (West Palm Beach, Florida) and no more than 25'underwater. I have set up a test area in my yard to get use to the unit, But I can't seem to find the tones. Thanks

Mike: I think I might be able to help you. Try this: at the beach the first few times. Set the switch to pinpoint. Turn your volume all the clockwise. Set the threshold control to a slight hum. Now slowly sweep the search coil side to side as close to the ground as possible. You are looking for a spot in the sand with no metal. Once you find a spot in the sand with no metal, place the coil down (hold it still) switch your control to disc. Now turn your sensitivity control to about 11 o'clock. If your not falsing to bad, leave it there and start hunting. You might also, want to take some coins, pull-tabs, and other targets down to the beach with you and lay those targets down and listen for the response the machine makes. Sweep the coil slow.Hope the was helpful to you.....Tony from Tidewater

You probably have the right charger, but with the Excallibur battery pack there is a adapter to charge the battery pack. If you got this new I would check the box as I believe you should find the adapter.

I have found that putting a nickle in my shoe helps bring the unit back to a steady hum after hitting iron or other odd signals. I like it when my hum is at the same pitch as it allows me to discern targets better. Just don't get you foot to close to the head, I generally have no problems except people asking me whats under my foot. :)
