New Excal II bench test questions

Buried Crap NJ

New member
Hi I wanted to go to the beach today but the NJ rain was just too much. So I did some bench testing with my box of targets. First off I have been detecting since 1974 and I have been beach shallow water hunting since 1991 with a 1280X so this machine will be new to me. I need to retrain my ears.
I followed the instructions and found I was confused. Sensitivity 4 I set the threshold to a low hum. Wait let me back up, the threshold turns with little or no sound then it starts and when you let go it gets louder? Then you turn it down and there's no sound, it's very touchy. Then I got it set in a very low hum. Passed targets over it and they all seem the same to me. Except aluminum and iron kind of broken and some nulling. I was using silver 10 25 clad 10 25 cu 1c IH v nickle 14k ring you get the idea. Next I tried different sensitivity all was at 1 discrimination. I also tried pinpoint and I like the results as far as target sound. I used auto and tried the bench testing again I like that as well.
After a long time I found that if you set the Threshold to be a low hum then backed off to silent mode. This is where I found the best results all iron targets null, aluminum went high pitched and the coins all got there very own sound. The 14k ring was the loudest I could have ever heard?
I been around long enough to know its not the detector that needs to be good but the operator needs to know the detector! I guessing each detector has it's own sweet spot, nothing is written in stone. Please all comments welcome

ok heres how i use mine at the beach
all metal mode
thresh hold just barely on
sens 6 or so in wet and in dry at 10
disc 2 1/2 or so
this has worked great for me..:minelab::detecting:

See manual page 24.

Volume : Setting the Volume of Target Signals.

Turning the Volume up high is strange to most of us, it caught me of hand at my first test.

Hello Buried Crap, bench testing, especially in the house can cause all kinds of issues regarding RF, etc. The best place is outside, or in the field conditions, imo. Set to Disc, threshold at audible, but loud enough you can hear the variances in it, volume about 3/4 wide open, set the sensitivity at about the (NO AUTO)1 o'clock position(assuming that the arrow heading straight at the coil is noon, savvy?), but listen for wavering in the threshold, back off clockwise if this occurs. The Discrimination NEVER leaves 1. Try to start there and dig EVERYTHING that gives you tone and as you dig targets, listen to how they sound. You will figure it out, but it going to take some time. For a time, you will wonder, what the hell did I do buying this thing, but eventually you will fall in love with it. I've been running the units, since Jan.'06 and still learning. Don't think you will get it overnight. Best of luck to ye!

As GH says, only i use the volume 80% to full(i'm getting a bit deaf) and remember that the sens control works in reverse, clockwise is less.
Once you get used to it you can hunt in All metal and change to disc to check targets. DISCRIMINATE HIGHER THAN 1 AT YOUR PERRIL

i agree with gulf hunter as he did advise me same a year ago when i got my excalibur2:thumbup::minelab::clapping::detecting:i might sugguest also getting the ear cd that kellyco sells too,it did help me to identify the tones a bit easier..:clapping:hope all this helps, just take your ttime and dont give up youll be digging allot of great targets once you understand how this machine works..im still a newbie for over a year now and do get to beach allot and still have allot of fun with mine finding rings and coins, i still dig junk at times but my junk pile has gone to very few at times now that i understand what tone is what..good luck

Ok guys I screwed up on the tides? I got down 1 hr after dead low so I was working against the tide. These beaches took a beating in the November storm and they have been bull dozing sand up the dunes.A very short beach with no cuts today so I worked the area's that have produced before. It took some time for my fist target it was a piece of copper (flat) the same for the next but this was a very tiny round bullet size copper? Then I found some clad and some zn pennies. In total for 2hrs I found 6 zn pennies 5 clad dimes 1 silver dime (1959) 3 quarters. I did loose a Target due to bad digging first scoop missed wave buried it. I dug several scoops but nothing kept caving in no signal any mode! That always bothers me, but today with new detector even more. I do need to buy a belt harness as I am getting too old to swing all day long. The good news is I am batting 100% on silver /gold per trip. I only went 1 time.

Great attitude! Maybe you will accomplish it!

great going.....:thumbup::detecting::clapping::minelab:

Guys thanks for the help. I still have a question on Excal sounds.I guess I am showing my age here, but like I said I have been doing this along time. Why do I even care what sound a dime makes or a quarter makes? I always dig every noise I get on the beach. When I had the 1280x I did dig lots of pull tabs or pop tops, iron but I do have a good ring count for it over the last 15 yrs with the 1280x .
I do enjoy the null for iron with the Excal but if its makes a noise I going to dig it.
