New Ex cal II 10 Very unstable Threshold

The 2003 Ex cal 1000 Died this weekend so I picked up a new II today. I assembled it and put a charged pack on it and hit the yard. I could not get the Threshold to settle down in auto or even at lowest sens setting.... Any suggestions or anyone else experience it.

Well you have had a Excalibur in the past so you should know your way around. The only cause I can see is electrical noise. But that even seems odd. I get a smooth threshold in my garage, but it is affected by the underground wire in my yard. I would make sure its not something in your area, take it out in a field and give it a whirl. Then make the call to Minelab or the dealer as it brandi new. Good luck let us know what happens!

Thanks, I will do that today. I found it odd because my old Excal 1000 never had a problem in the yard before. I will let you know what happens later.

Test it where you hunt. Mine is just the opposite, i get little falsing even at sensitivity at 10. I was worried it was under tuned, but it finds deep small targets.

Dew and Buried Crap NJ, you guys were right it had to have been electrical current in the yard. I tested it on the beach tonight and it was fine.I just cant believe the difference between the two units.I see a slight excal learning curve ahead of me. Thanks for the advice. HH...

My excal behaves differently at certain places, too, but I'm aware of it, so I don't pay it any mind. Good luck with the new machine!

Seems like the shielding added on the Excal II really does the job
Your right Neil...Had a couple excalibur two's apart..the excal II use's a Aluminum shielding on the under side of the decal..very cheap..and it's not grounded to the PCB. Like the shielding on the sovereign xs2, I guess Minelabs said shielded but never said from what.

Not sure how well a shield can work without being grounded on the Excal ..... In audio , sometimes the shield is left only connected to the one side of the audio signal ground wire and left open on the other end , but at least it's tied in on one end of the circuit ground ...Not sure how it works in this Excal application .....Jim

That's really curious - I wonder if the cylindrical shape of the shielding in the excal is literally just a physical shield from electrons rather than being a grounded shield - I don't know much about audio design, but the shape of the excal could be coming into play with they way they use the shielding.
