New E-Tracs first view of soil...

FastnHigh

New member
First time out with my new Etrac after air testing all I could with the finds from my Garrett, so I knew the iron sounds.

I am fairly new to metal detecting and only 81 pages through the Sabisch book - which is really good, even for beginners.
So I left the machine in Auto, whilst I get used to the multi conductive sounds, and I have to say this machine can be used straight out the box.
I know I may be missing somethings that more skilled experienced detectorist may have found but I did manage to dig 3 roman, a cartwheel penny, 1 grotty coin and surprisingly for me only 1 nail.

Best of the lot was this one :

The ground was very stony and I hope it was the stones, rather than my digger, that took a bite out of her belly.

I think this is Marcus Aurelius - Sestertius. 166-167 AD based on a bit of googling - see below

I will not be offended if I have got this wrong.:sadwalk:

So back to the book.

That's got to be a rush diggin coins that old!

great finds.

Hi there Steve.....Didn't take you long to pull a few nice items! Well done.

I reckon in a couple of weeks you'll be needing a wheel-barrow for your finds, on your better sites.

Put your E-Trac at about 25-26 manual, and if you can't tolerate too much 'ferrous audio' grunting then just Iron mask out Fe 35 to 27 and give that a try.

OR better still.....run with a clean 'ALL METAL' screen. and 4 tones, and let the lowest tone be your IRON signal indicator

Ferrous audio. (Best for UK relic hunting, in my opinion)

Pitch hold

Dig every 'neat' audio....just observe the Visual numbers, but don't let them be too decisive in your assessment to dig or not to dig.

Promise me that you'll dig every thing in these early outings, and then tell us the consequences.

AUDIO....repeatable audio....that's main criteria.

If you have subdued the majority of iron with the recommended masking, then the rest is worth listening to in FERROUS tones, and digging if its repeatable audio.

Your 'handle'....Fast'nHigh'...love it.....nod-nod,wink-wink..!!!!!!!

Your new E-Trac is going to be the best unit you've ever used.

If you're ever 'up north' come and join us....TheMarshall

Look forward to your future posts, for I'm sure you will be bringing home some cracking finds.

Thanks TheMarshall,

I will give the manual sensitivity and Iron mask Fe 35 to 27 a try.

I thought all the good stuff on the etrac appears on FE 12 - so conductive sounds were best. I was just getting used to conductive sounds so I will stick with this for now.

Thanks for advice and encouragement, 2nd view of soil is going to be on Sunday - so if I'm lucky I will post an update.....

I don't have a cover for my etrac and people appear to report that you can't read the screen if you do have one - what do you do in the rain ?

Cheers

Hi there again Steve......

'I thought all the good stuff on the etrac appears on FE 12 '.......Probably so, at shallower depths and in more 'ideal' conditions....but those targets are there for any detector to find.

Now get past 8 inches, and throw in some ferrous trash and / or more mineralized ground....What have you got?

Generally, a shift in Fe for that target and a movement towards the iron boundary....that's the important change, and one which fools the ordinary detector and detectorist.

When your 'coin' or similar non-ferrous target gets its Fe degraded ( increased in numerical value, moving from Fe12 towards the 20's) by increased depth etc. then you are in danger of either discriminating it out or mistaking its identity, if you naively only dig Fe 12 line-up items.

Serious, experienced relic hunters have quickly learned the reality of matters, and so reaped the benefits.

Minelab designed the E-Trac to provide its owner with a very 'powerful' facility. EXPANDED FERROUS RANGE READINGS.

That is the ability of your E-Trac to identify with better resolution, the FERROUS value of a target, or more importantly the 'combined targets' in the coil's field of view.

That is the benefit of the new expanded Fe range...( roughly between 16 and the 30's).

Wave all the coins or non-ferrous targets you can lay your hands on, at your E-Trac.......How many targets have an Fe falling in the 16 to 27 areas????

So when you are out in the field and a target ends up there, what does it mean to you?

What do you do?......Leave it???......No way ...No.No.No.

Look first at the depth gauge. Deeper than 8 inches???

Listen to the audio, (most important)
