Found this last fall.....decided to try cleaning it up a little yesterday and found a date on the bottom..1830 or 1839? And it's starting to look like silver..??

Nice find McDave. Did you think it was old when you found it? Sometimes I enjoy finding those kinds of things more than I do coins.

Nice find Dave.................Bill in NC

I found out that it is called a "Miraculous Mary" pendant. The date 1830 is the date when the design of the medal was received in a vision by St. Catherine Laboure. So it's probably not that old, but still cool nonetheless.

Do you think it's aluminum John? I passed it under the coils of my Ace 250 and Minelab Explorer and they both read it as an Indian Head penny. One of my detecting club members suggested that it may be sterling or at least silver-plated due to the fact that it was made in Italy. Apparently they don't skimp on the materials over there. No markings indicating that it is silver though. But I have found other aluminum items that did'nt clean-up nearly as nice as this did.

Most prob. silver. Pretty cool, when I find these I hang them in front of our vehicals inside rear view mirror. Facing foward it's always looking out for us. Believer or not I think it's good Karma. Anyway it cleaned up nice after lieing in the Great Dirt Bath for who knows how long.

Wow! That cleaned up beautifully! How did you do it?

Chris

WTG. Great finds and it cleaned up very nice. I never heard of using baking soda to clean something like this. I tried worcestershire sauce on my 1913 V-,nickel and it came out pitted. Of course, I left it overnight and I guess that was too long. I have heard of using baking soda and a small battery to clean some items, but don't want to mess up anymore coins. Electrolysis???? Is that what you call it? Anything from 1830 would make my day or year even. I tried to read the inscription on the right side, but all I could get was pray for us who have recourse... and can't make out the rest of it. Thanks for posting the photos.

I just made a baking soda/water mixture and scrubbed it with an old toothbrush. Works great on silver coins that are'nt really worth more than their melt value.

I have found six and they all have 1830 on them. Maybe someone knows why they all have that date on them.

Gonna use your (Irish recipe) on some of my uncleaned silver coins, and post the pics later.

You did a good job on the Pendant and it was also a very nice find, you should wear the

Pendant on a chain, not only will it keep you safe it may also lead you to all that Gold and

Silver waiting to be found.

Good Luck Dave and H H

Les.

Leslie, if I put that pendant around my neck, lightning will strike me dead.:stretcher: I have'nt been to church since my step-mom made me get up at 7am every sunday to go....26 years? It would be hypocritical of me to think that it will help me in any way...lol.

The baking soda paste should work great on your silver coins. I would'nt recommend cleaning any key-date or graded coins with it. I'm not really sure how abrasive it is.
