Sorry, it's not for me. Makes everyone think they need to run out, buy a detector, and get some of that easy money.

We already have to many newbies digging up are sites with shovels and getting them shut down like are Forrest preserves.

Too many newbee's in the hobby now digging up are sites with shovels and getting them shut down like are forest preserves!

I'm with Rob and Harold...newbies don't know what they're doing and some just don't care to take trash out of the water, fill holes and are just plain rude to other beach-goers. if these shows are going to air, they need to show best practices so new people to the hobby have a clue.

Its entertainment & sure beats watching the Cardashians. HH TIM

My two cents is this. These newbies that are disillusioned by these shows run out and purchase detectors thinking it is so easy to find the finds they are finding on TV. After taking the detector out to find the reality of detecting they quickly sell the detectors at a discounted price to us who knows the reality. This is a hobby of patience and perserverance. We are the ones that love the hobby and we know it takes research, a lot of searching and digging. I look at the newbies as discount detector stores.

Here's a post from another forum, see what we mean? No idea what's happening, but they saw the show.

We have been watching Dig Wars and love it, so I have a few questions about this as a hobby. How much do I need to spend to get a decent setup? I dont want to break the bank, but dont want to be disappointed 3 months later. We live in the center of Florida and have beaches to either side less than an hour away. There are quite a few civil war battle fields around as well and I am a HUGE history buff so this seems like a way to get my kids interested in some of the history of this country. How deep will most metal detectors read and which ones work in water. There are a ton of lakes and things get dropped in teh water all the time around the docks.

I have been checking my local craigslist for them and a Bounty Hunter Discovery 1100 is available for $125 is that worth it?

The problem though is until they get ''disillusioned'' they cause problems with digging techniques and just to many out there doing it so people take more notice. Then you get the busy body women with nothing better to do complaining till somebody listens and does something just to shut her up. And as Rob,ILL. knows it will happen as are Cook County Forrest Preserves were shut down. I hunted those for 15 years and never dreamed it would happen,But it did as most just care about how much silver they can get in a year. They even keep track of it on another forum. They probally get mad if they find a Indian head penny or V nickle!

Well , 1 neutral positive out of 9 replies should tell you what you need to know going into reruns Mike.
Count mine as another negative.
BTW, what was the audience share and raw numbers , I'm sure you have them don't you?

Already ran into issues in my community due to these types of shows....no thanks....

If they put on a show of how Metal Detecting really is, no one but fellow MDers would watch it...sounds great for us, but bad for TV...The last good MD show was the White's series back in the what??? 70s???
It is up to US the seasoned veterans to gather these newbs under our wings and TEACH them the right way to do things...I have done this in my area, and I am convinced it has helped them become better detectorists.
You cannot gather them all, as I know there are those in my area that know about us, but remain secretive...Can not say I blame them, as good finds in our area are hard to come by.
I try my best to find the new folks out digging in my area...Post ads in the Looking for Hunting Buddies forum, post on Supermarket bulletin boards, post on Craigslist...But it IS up to US to teach these new guys if WE want to preserve our hobby.
Wal-Mart, Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Sports Authority sure are not gonna teach them...

HH,

Well most of my sites are shut down. If they close Chicago parks then I'm out of the hobby till I retire and move to Alabama where my Family has a house and about 500 acres with 4 old house sites dating back to pre civil war. Then the newbie yuppies can do what they want as far as I'm concerned,But eventually they and the guys on the show from Chicago will have no where to detect. I guess they don't realize that because if they shut down the parks the lake front will be shut down also so no where to find there 150,000 worth of jewelry. And don't tell me it won't happen because the cook county forest preserves are in the Chicago suburbs so the parks aren't far behind!

i don't get what you are saying in your post. this person seems to be interested in the hobby for all the reasons that we all had when we started and are asking questions that need to be aked by someone interested in metal detecting.

Well if you don't understand then I can't explain it. I think ROB knows what I mean as we hunt the same area. NUFF SAID.

I definitely will not be watching. I have already had one of those shows cost me a place to detect after having been invited to detect the property. Land owner saw those Fools on Diggers and I could not convince him that I did not conduct myself in that manner. Thanks but NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
