New Detector

I've been out of metal detecting for quite a few years now but looking to get back into it. Always owned Tesoro's and was thinking about getting a vaquero. Some reviews rate this as a great depth machine but others say it wont go below 5". Toss up between this and The AT pro. Never had a Garrett but I like the 3 tone I.D. not sure on the digital display do you find this a distraction? Also how is there customer servicewhich in my opinion speaks highly of a company. I'm looking for opinions that are honest about good and bad, not brand bashing. I'll mostly be doing coin hunting with some relic hunting since I live in the N.E.

I have only used the AT Pro so this isn't a fair comparison. For relic hunting I would assume the vaquero would be better as all I have read points to it being a very deep machine. But you said you will mainly coin hunt and that is were the AT Pro shines. The best thing you can do on an AT Pro is learn the pro mode audio and then you will never dig iron again plus coins just sound great. I think the audio on the Tesoro detectors is great too and I hope to use one in the future because of that fact. Coin hunting with a vaquero in parks at least would be a pain for me since I like to dig nickels and there is no notch disc on the vaq. The AT Pro is a great silver hunting machine but for gold hunting having TID makes it harder to do. Hope this helps.

I have experienced first hand the Outstanding Customer Service that Garrett Provides. If there is anyone better than Garrett on Customer Service I do not know who they are.

The Vaquero can be very deep when you super tune it, so, yes, its deep. But, it has a draw back with that depth when super tuned, it tends to turn into a little more of all-metal search. So, the really good discrimination abilities fall off when you try to push beyond the 6" range or so.
Now, for relic hunting this may be great, and in areas where the coins are within the 6" range its fine.

Hi Barry,
Most detectors out there will do the job you want, each manufacturer has to compete with the others for sales,so they have to produce good machines.I've used loads of different machines over the years and found a lot of stuff with all of them......once you start buying into a manufacturers upper range models, it's a safe bet that you will have a machine that will perform well, whatever you decide on.

Been detecting 39 years. Had about 45 or so detectors. Found 116 gold rings. If I could only have one metal detector, it would be an AT Pro. Does everything very well also completly water proof. Just my 2 cents.....Jack
