ok i got so many coin hits it wasnt even funny every step i took a new coin hit ! coin here coin there every were was coins .. also alota trash too ... but there was so many coins but they were all 6-8+ inches down .. i had a small hand shovel they were mostly quarters and dimes and a few pennies well thats what it said ...so i dug about 10-15 holes.. but i couldnt find a thing !!! i guess 8 inches is deeper then i thougt it was so hard to dig 8 inches down with a small hand garden scoop i dug about 5-6 inches then the ground was like clay !! but i was gettin so many readings i think i need one of those hand pin pointers...well i found an old dime 1970 it said it was 2 inches down i couldnt find it so i looked in the plug and there it was ! i found an old toy gun and a bunch of pull tabs .. but about 90% were real far down and also i kept getting .50/1.00 reading alot but it was also real real jumpy ! so i watched the dvd it came with and it says if your by power lines ... turn the sensitivity down i guess it was jumpy cuz i had sensitivty jacked up !! well im still not 100% sure about the sensitivity but i am not gonna let this discourage me ! seeing all that was in the ground i just gotta learn the detector ! im comin back next weeek and im gonna try my best dig every hole and take the good with the bad ! thanks for replyin to my previous message !!

also my grandma moved into the neighbor hood in 1950 and she says they have been doing 4th of july there about 10 or 20 years before she moved in soo hopefully this will be a great place !

Adam:

I am going to give you some good advice that I expect will be backed up here by others.... START OVER.........Use Preset coins mode for a little while.Get the feel of your detector. You may have stated type of Whites detector and I missed it..Slow down..learn slowly and you will get much better results...HONEST !!! If it's a Whites it works well if you let it..What type detector did you buy XLT M6 DFX Prizm ????? All have a beginning mode...You need to use it for a while.

Then he needs to keep the sens down for a while............They get a little irratic turned up full tilt...

Hey man, dont get distraught. Im new at this also, just got a detector couple weeks back. I did hunt a bit back in the late 70s with my dad but dont recall much. I got home with my machine and went outside, laid some coins out and went over em, raised my coil up and down to kinda get a feel for sounds. Then I started hunting my own yard, wow,I have a nasty yard, full of iron, lol. Didnt find a coin, not one.
But i went to a couple places and pretty much struck out again. Nothin but iron and pull tabs. So I started going to some tot lots I knew of,just to get myself goin. I have found around six, seven bucks in change in the sand and wood chips at these lots, a couple cheap rings. Thought I was getting the hang,so I went to a lot I knew of in the older part of our town. Well, lol,it was frustrating to say the least. Every two inches was a pull tab, aluminum trash, or iron signal. I dug a lot of pull tabs but was afraid to dig the iron (didnt want to dig to much, didnt want someone to say anything,im new and dont want to cause trouble). So I went back to the tot lots, lol. But Im gonna learn!!!!! You may have someone around to give you some pointers. If not, keep coming here and to other forums to learn. I dont ask many questions as most have been asked and answered. I just cruise the forums, searching for answers.
Hang in there, youre not alone,
John

Hi Bowie:

He will do fine..I suspect he cranked the sens up just a bit to much. Maybe his ground was a little hot and it gave him some feed back....
If he keeps it lower and slower for a while pretty soon he will out hunt all of us.

Update:

Adam:
Go to www.whitesmetaldetectors.com..........go to products PrixmIV and hit opereration Jimmy "Sierra" Normandi gives a nice video presentation on the operation of your detector..He explains sensitivity in detail...6 is preset on your machine.....Give it a listen and i think you will get better results.

Like some have said - turn the sensitivity down until it quiets down. Also dig repeatable beeps. Find a target then pinpoint your find. Then with the coil directly centered and over the target swing your coil real fast side to side only 4 inches and no more. Now if the target beeps 4 times or more in a row then dig it. You will save yourself time if you buy a Predator or Lesche digging knife. It's a long story but they are the same knife built by different companies. Another tip is if at the end of your swings you get a beep then your sens is too high.

thanks guys and thanks elton for the message that helped me out more then anything !!! its almost 3am im in chicago by the way ! and i just wanna go out and metal detect right now !! lol.. you guys got me not so discouraged anymore so i guess i gota go slow and lower the sens. just a tad and double chek all my finds before digging them because i dont wanna dig up things that arent there !! thanks alot im gonna take pics for next week... well hopefully i have pics to take !! lol...

You want to velcro or tape the cable on the lower rod so it doesn't move when you swing. A lot of new detector users forget this very important step and it can cause your motion detector to signal everytime the cable moves,,,,,Just something to check also...Good Luck .....and also make sure the connector is screwed on all the way, but you don't have to wrench it on , just make sure its on straight and finger tight....HH..Rich
