New cz3d.... Nail buster

Nailman

New member
Hey guys, I just bought a brand new cz3d from kellyco, along with a new 5inch coil for trashy areas. You'll have to excuse my frustration, but I hate it when I feel like I just wasted a bunch of money! I've read the other posts on here where other people have the same issues with there cz3d. I feel your pain guys. I should have done more research on metal detectors, before pulling the trigger on this 800.. Nail finder. I bought this machine because it was supposed to be designed for older coins at old homesites.... Well guess what else old homesites have? .... NAILS......lots, and lots of them! If I could make money selling rusty nails, I could quit my job! Apparently, the guy who designed this machine works for NASA? Good job NASA! Let me guess he started helping NASA prior to jan, 28, 1986? Isn't that when we has the space shuttle discovery disaster? Hmm... It's all coming together now. You would think for 800.00, you'd get a quality detector, that didn't give high tones(good signals) on nails. High tone, high tone, high tone, nail, nail, nail! Come on... Really? By the way, my home is up for sale, and if anyone is interested in buying a nice home, with a nail free yard I have what your looking for. If this is the kind of people NASA hires, I'm sending my resume. I should have no problem getting employment there!

"I just bought a brand new cz3d from kellyco". I wiould suggest you get some time on it and figure out how to tell nails from good targets. Like all detectors, it will find nails. The only nails that fool me any more are the bent ones, and if I increase my disc to knock them out I would lose the lower gold and such targets. Nails, especially straight ones have certain signature to them, take the time and learn what it is. Run your disc at first position so you hear all the iron and can seperate the good mid/high tone targets mixed in. Learn the machine!

You know that some of us actually want to find nails. If you are one of those sites with a lot of quiet ground, you need to find those nail beds to find the goodies. Few machines do that as well as the CZ's.

Once there, you can start looking for good targets among those nails and the CZ's make that a lot easier than most machines out there.

So next time you're out there in the woods looknig for the spot of an old cabin or stick home that went away before electricity or indoor plumbing came around, find the nails, then the patience and understanding of what that machine can do. But I'd say get a larger coil, a better site and it'll all be good!

What settings are you running. Sensitivity at 4. 8 is about the highest you want to run
If you can get a Hi tone and rotate more than 50% and have Hi tone , most likely a good target.
I have read of many digging iron with all brands of new machines.

Insults wont help your cause either.

Most detectors I have used have a slight tendency to hit deep rusty nails as a coin on a one way hit. Try doing a 90 degree/2 way check.
Learn the unit. It is one of the best detectors out there.I have a CZ-3D and for the money it does what it should.
I have found countless rings, silvers, and clad with it. It does the job. It might not have a digital ID system, but it works well. All the CZ's are a killer on nickels--ID is like 95% on.
If I had permission to do an old home site I would go in with a 100% confidence with this unit.
In fact, the CZ's are so good I just picked up a second hand CZ70pro for beach/shallow water/ and light rain hunts.
I own an Etrac and that sometimes as well hits iron nails too as good tones if you don't check the signals both ways and LISTEN really well. Something you have to do with all these detectors.
As far as Tom D. he is very knowledgeable in his field--spend some time on his web site and I am sure he would be glad to answer your questions.
The coins are not going to just "JUMP" out of the ground for you. You have to work for them.

On a more serious note, what discrimination setting are you using. If you are using 1-6, you will get fooled a lot with a high tone bleed since you won't hear the low iron tone due to it being canceled out.

Hate to say it, but even in high iron nail areas, you have to run in setting 0 and LISTEN to the iron. Any hit that has low tones 40-50% or more from multiple angles, move on. You will still get fooled by some deeper iron, but rusty nails in the 1-7 inch range will almost always hit as some form a low iron tone a lot and you can safely move on and not dig those types of targets.

Another point that was mentioned is do not run your sensitivity too high. Start out in the 2-3 range. The unit will still go plenty deep and it will false on iron a lot less.

Even though the CZ is simple to operate, it will be a nail grabber from the start if you don't know how to run it. Low sensitivity, discrimination setting at 0, make sure the unit is ground balanced correctly, dig all repeatable mid and hit tones that hit from multiple angles and you should be able to learn the unit in about 4-5 hunts.

The nails do slow you down with a cz.
My procedure is as follows; get a two way high tone and center the target, rotate, any low grunts as I'm rotating, I move on. I have dug hundreds of targets to check that I'm not passing up an old coin and it's almost always a nail in the side of the hole.
The cz is not the best in nail/iron infested sites, not fast enough. I use a different unit and smaller coil for those sites.
Sometimes deep iron (10"+-) will get high tones all around, I still dig those but their a whisper of a tone if you have it set for modulated audio.
I prefer the cz for no or low trash fields, when I need to go deep.
I'd say keep using it, the machine will train you.

Keep in mind that the cz platform was designed in the 90's and still holds it's own, to this day.
I could not bring myself to ever sell my 1021.

I'll second some of things said above; with particular emphasis on running the discriminator setting on 0 so that you hear the low tones; don't run the sensitivity too high and that it can be very useful to circle around the target while sweeping it to explore it from all directions. One thing not mentioned in this thread is coil speed. Nails frequently break high tone with a moderate to fast sweep speed with a CZ. Slow the sweep down, way down, and see if it breaks more low tone. Walk around the target with a slow sweep listening for all tones.

The CZ is a fairly easy to use detector, but it can take some time to get good at reading what it is telling you and to get best performance from it. It is easy to push it too fast on the sweep and if you are not listening to all tones, it is very easy to dig nails.

Hay nailman that thing is no good i will give you $200.00 to take it off your hands. No need for anyone to hunt with a detector that they don't like. Dang nail detector.

Looks like he just registered to make his first post, which is a negative, to one of the best overall detectors out there. Maybe he should get a WallyWorld $49 detector.

Sometimes you can tell if it is a nail or iron junk by pinpointing the target, finding the center, and then sweeping back over it. A lot of times the pinpoint and the tone will not be in the same place. Like it may be falsing off the edge of the nail.....Make sense?

The character assassination contained in the post makes me wonder if this wasn't just a juvenile attempt at insulting Tom veiled as a comment about the CZ-3D.

You guys have patience and class to give a helpful response to this Troll. Nailman is obviously the kind who hits his thumb then blames the hammer. It could never be him.

NASA Tom is a fine man and highly skilled master metal detector. Nailman has no reason to insult him or his accomplishments. Hopefully if Nailman ever dose a second post it will start with an apology.

Man i would never get rid of my 1021my either. I will say this the CZ's do love iron, bit they are deep deep machines. It will tell you if it's iron. I dont dig targets that stutter, that is a tell tail sign of a nail.

I just bought a CZ-7a Pro, took it out on its first run today, yes it did fool me on cut nails, but it also found 2 Indian head pennies in a place that has been pounded, they were down about 6 to 8 inches. If I can do this every time I go out with it, I will put up with digging some nails.

Simply google Mikes CZ page as it has a lot of info rel telling nails from high coins..

Sure I have been using CZ's for 20 years but I rarely dig one unless going for an extreme deep iffie...

I don't know if this guy is just plain not used to a CZ or a rebel rouser in any case Tom did not invent the CZ but was instrumental in the makeup of the newest CZ3D and is a credit to the hobby and post certainly not justified...

Either learn to use your unit or take up knitting comes to mind...and it don't come overnight and in your case may never come....
