New CZ rig

Well-known member
Thanks to PyrorCreekJoe, I now have my CZ6a mounted on a straight shaft, under the cuff. Joe sent me the upper rod assembly of a CZ, and I cut the rod on both sides of the piece the CZ slides onto. I then attached it to a Babbs straight shaft and with the 10.5 inch coil, it's balanced perfect.

Can't wait to try it out on the wet sand...hopefully tomorrow.

With the 8 inch coil, it's gonna be a great land unit where I can now swing it all day long and not have to hip mount it.

It's funny, but karma is a great thing. About a month ago, SkiWhiz was asking for a pair of headphones. I had a set just laying around so I just sent it to him, free of charge.

I then ask if anyone has a CZ upper shaft I can purchase, and Joe sends me both the upper and middle rod...FREE OF CHARGE.

The people on this forum are great.

THANKS AGAIN JOE !

John

John,

That's a good looking machine! Karma is a cool thing and some don't believe in it but the proof is in the pudding. I didn't know about you giving the headphone away, but knew that I didn't need the upper and middle rod any longer. It just made sense to me to give them to someone who could use them. I am so glad your project turn out the way you planned. Keep us posted on your finds. The CZs rule in a class of their own.

Enjoy,
Joe

Hopefully I get a chance tomorrow to use it on the beach. The CZ6a was my first real detector that I purchased back in the early 90's and always love using it. My dad had a Whites coin master that I used, but it wasn't mine.

Now that I don't have to hip mount it, I can use all 3 of my coils with ease. I like using the 10.5 on the beach when I can, and with it balanced right, that's what I will be using tomorrow ( if it does not rain too hard). Can't wait to use the small coil on it too. I always had the unit mounted on the shaft when using the small coil, but it did become tiring after a while. I have the original CZ upper rod and it does not have the slits to put in an arm strap and I never tried to modify it. Not only does this new set up balance better, but it has the arm strap which is a big plus for me since I have elbow and shoulder issues. My arm just tires out when using a heavy detector.

I will keep my 6a forever...not only is it a great detector, but for sentimental reasons too !

Nice set up. That is exactly the set up I want to build. I have the 7/8" tubing and bicycle bar ends that come out at the correct angle so I can clamp on and won't need to practice my welding. I think I can make the detector mounting bracket ... just need to dig out the tools and find time. Too many projects and this isn't one of the high priority ones right now.

Looking forward to seeing how you do at the beach with the set up!

It appears that the control housing is upside down....did you put anything on the control housing to protect it? I use the CZ-5 less and less because the configuration of the "S" rod makes the CZ-5 off balanced and not comfortable to use for long periods of time. At one time, I had entertained thoughts about trying to mount it on a rod similar to the type used for the CZ-70 Pro. Thanks for posting the pictures with the story. Kelley (Texas) :)

..and its pretty dust and splash proof, so I did not put anything over the housing. I know it's upside down, but once it's set up, I go by tone anyway. I don't mess with the controls too much anyway.

This set up is for the beach and it's still pretty easy to switch from all metal back to disrim and vice versa. Most of the time on the beach in the wet sand, I hunt in all metal until I start to find the patches of targets. Then I switch over the discrim. In all metal you can swing the machine a little faster. Once in discrim, have to slow it down to a crawl or it will start to false some with using higher sensitivity.

When using the smaller 5 inch coil, I sometimes use the stock rod assembly and set up. It's not that bad to use. Still...I think regardless of what coil, this is going to be my main set up when using my CZ.

Good point though....I may put a plastic bag over the unit when beach hunting since I know what even salt air and sea spray can do.

Taking it to the beach tomorrow FOR SURE !

I would like a set up like that for my CZ5, only mount the control box on top of the handle. I'm not saying your set up is wrong or anything, I would just like mine setup like a CZ70 is all. I had seen an ad some where about babbs straight rods, but for the life of me I can't find it. Do you have a phone # or anything for babbs? You can PM me if you wish. Thanks............Hombre

Now that's what I'm talk'n about, I'd like to have a rig like that. The trigger switch........is it like a White's where you can lock it forward for all metal, pulled for momentary allmetal, and centered for disc?
I like it........do you do custom work?

I have another possible option for you.I also Archery hunt and use a Wrist Sling for my Bow. I have recently adapted that idea to my Metal Detector. I used a nylon strap 1.5 inches wide a about 20_ 24 long.I wrapped the strap around the shaft infront of the Grip and then looped it back behind the grip. When I found the loop length to be acceptable I taped it off with Black tape. Adjust length by more or less wraps on the shaft. I love mine.and it balances the machine better I think. Good Luck

Hi John. You said (It's funny, but karma is a great thing. About a month ago, SkiWhiz was asking for a pair of headphones. I had a set just laying around so I just sent it to him, free of charge)

Just wanted you to know that I am very greatful for the headphones you sent me, I use them every time I go out detecting. Lots of great people in this hobby and so happy that someone helped you out. I am proud to be involved in the hobby. Thanks! Steve.

P.S. I traded my detector for a Fisher CZ-5. Should be here around the end of the week. This will be a differnt beast for me for sure.
