Hi everyone,
My name is Kevin and I live in Wisconsin. I have used White's Detector for years. I have had a Classic II and recently and IDX Pro. I finally have upgraded to MXT. I have had my MXT for about a week, and have done pretty good so far with coins. I have found two indian heads, one at 7" and one at 10". Both read a 74 on the VDI meter. I have found one mercury dime 1945 (at 9") which read 76 and a silver roosevelt (at 7") which also read 76.

My trouble is that I have not been able to find any rings yet. No jewelry at all. Can I ask, what VDI readings should I be looking for? I am running the gain as high as possible (+1 or +2), running in coin mode, ground balanced in ground balance position, and I usually have had the nickel setting chosen, (the 12 o'clock preset). I have gotten pretty good at sweeping, and locking in on targets, but finding rings has eluded me.

If jewelry is in the ground, will it produce a rather solid tone? Will the VDI numbers be mostly fixed or will they fluctuate? If anyone could help me with some handy advice, I would much appreciate it.

Thank you!
Kevin

Gold rings run anywhere from foil( my lowest a 10 vdi) to my highest 57 vdi. My woman's gold rings with stones have been in the 10 to 26 range. Silver rings will be in the 1 cent, dime, quarter range ( 70's to 80's) just like the silver coins. Jewelry can be even higher or lower.

You must have a good older spot to find that many old and silver coins in a week. I think you will find more gold (jewelry) at sports fields, beaches and parks.

Are you measuring you targets or going by the meter? My meter usually says my targets are deeper than they actually are. Actual 9" and 10" deep coins I don't run into that often.

I usually run the disc at a 2+ to 3. Why do you have the disc so high? Have you been finding many nickels? The MXT is hot on nickels. Rob

Rob,
Thanks for the advice. I am new at using the MXT but have been detecting now for about 4 years, mainly with my old detector, IDX Pro, and I had used a Fisher 1225X. I live in Stoughton, Wisconsin which is a pretty old historic town. I have visited many surrounding towns in the Madison, Wisconsin area and have been lucky to find some silver dimes and a few indian heads. No silver halves, or silver dollars or gold dollars yet, but I hope that will change!

I will run with a lower discrimination and see how that works. I will try a discrimination of 2 or 3 and see how that works. But, to understand you correctly, do you run your MXT with a gain of about +2 (turning the knob to the far right?)

Also, on my depth meter . . . it has been Right on the money! To the very inch! At an old park in Stoughton, WI where I live, I got a solid hit reading a penny at 9 inches. Sure enough, roughly 9 inches deep and at the bottom of the hole was an indian head, 1905 in very good condition. The silver dimes I found recently read at both 7" and 9" and both diggings agreed with the Depth meter. Thank you kindly for your help Rob!
I am so excited to have a White's MXT!
All the best from Wisconsin,
Kevin

Run your gain as high as you can but only as high as you keep a smooth threshold. Also if it is really trashy you might try it at 10 to help with masking from close targets.

Yes I run the +2 and +3 gain which is turned to the right. In tot lots there is a liner about 8" down. I turn the gain down to help get closer to the metal equipment.

I run my MXT in relic with the trigger in the center position because it eliminates the sputtering threshold for me. My MXT reads pretty accurate with the 9.5 coil only. My 8" is off about an inch and my 6 x 10 is off about 2".

If you lay a nail on the ground you will see the MXT will disc it out around a 2 or just a little higher. You don't want to lose those nickels and rings that are in that range. I would have missed a nice 14kt child's ring that read 12 if I had been set at 12 o'clock. Rob

Rob,
Thank you so much for replying. Your information helps a lot! I got lucky today and found another silver coin, a 1923 mercury dime at 5" in the same park that I have had all my luck. But alas, no rings. I also tried a nearby ball diamond. Lots of change, but no jewelry.

Can I ask you this Rob. When hunting in relic mode, if you are on a target that is likely a ring, will the VDI meter state: "button" or "bullet" or does it actually suggest "ring"? I think I will try that way of hunting and see what happens. Thanks again so much Rob!
Kevin

I don't use the symbols in either mode. I look at the VDI numbers. No it will not show a ring symbol in relic mode. If you look below the probablity bar you will see the coin and relic chart at the same time.

Rob,
Thanks again so very much! I am going to give it a try tomorrow and go hunting in the Relic mode, with the trigger pulled forward. I will look at VDI numbers but also will listen for the higher versus lower tones. And, I am going to hit some ball diamonds and see how I do there. I will let you know!
Thanks a bunch!
Kevin

HI
I have owned my MXT for 2 years now and i have found out that it has a great ID. I found a clad dime at 7"inches with my 5.3 coil at the park the other day. I have found that you have to dig every thing.

Priscill,
Thank you very much for your advice. I do appreciate it. I am finding more and more each day with my MXT. I have only had it about 2 weeks now, and I love it so much! I think I finally have a detector that I can honestly say I will keep for a lifetime! Again, thank you for your advice...
Kind regards,
Kevin

keven, if you are hiting coins at 7" and 10 " chear up my frend you have a super detector my experiance is 3 months befor my first ring it was silver and gave a +77 vdi but gold rings can go as low as VDI+ 8 to VDI 50 + i had a guy throw down his black hills gold ring it read VDI + 24 you will just have to dig lots of trash to find a gold ring hope that helps some
