New Coil worth the Cost?

I currently use a Garrett GTAx 550 equipped with a 7 x 10 Proformance Coil. I have thought about adding a 8.5 x 11 DD Proformance Coil to perhaps increase my depth some. With this model having been discontinued for several years now parts are starting to get hard to come by. Does anyone out there have any experience with this set up or coils? $99 isn't a lot of money but I would like to know if the possible increased depth/ performance is worth it or not. Thanks

This is just guessing, cuz I don't have either, but I would expect the DD to only go slightly deeper.
But not too much. It's not that much larger a coil. For the most part, depth is pretty linear with
size of the coil. For $100, I doubt I would bother with that older machine. But like I say, I'm
just guessing going from the usual known performance of coils.. :/ And I am cheap.

I PURCHASED A BIGGER COIL FOR MY ACE 250 AND COULD'NT SEE ANY CHANGE OR IMPROVEMENT.I'M THINKING THE BIGGER COIL IS JUST A SELLING HYPE.OH YES I DID SEE ONE DIFFERENCE IT WAS HEAVIER!!!GOOD LUCK TO YA.

I actually had the two DD coils that came with my Ace 350 in the sports package. I never liked the larger coil the 8.5x11, heavier is one negative and pinpointing is more difficult with the larger DD. I traded off my larger coil. The smaller coil has as good of depth as the 8.5x11. Pinpointing is much easier with the smaller DD coil and target I.d. is accurate! George

Big coils are for wide open areas. More ground covered per sweep. A little more depth maybe. That's the tool to use in those areas.

I've used the 550 for 5 yrs and it was truly a great machine. I used the stock coil and it always gave true readings so it was my go too coil. I bought the 10x14 DD performance coil hoping the same thing about gaining more depth which it gave but I found it to be quite heavy and hit on bottle caps more then coins perhaps because i always ran on full sensitivity so I never ended up using it much. The stock coil has quick response and does work into trash well but of all coils I've looked at I wish I would have bought the sniper coil for the high trash sites. It's affordable, small, and easy to carry around. This machine was my 1st machine and perhaps thy most fun machine as its a coin shooting monster and hammers on silver. It ran circles around my minelab explorer2 but didn't go quite as deep.

Hope this helped

I can only speak for the sniper coil-it will pay for your whole outfit at worthwhile sites. It's an investment-not an expenditure.

May buy the sniper coil instead of the larger one. Thanks

550 was my first detector had a lot of great finds with it.once i bought a sniper coil it never came off.love the atpro but miss my old 550 some days.sold it to my friend he does not want to sell it back to me haha.

I still have my 550, put a sniper on it also. I go to that rig a lot at the parks and ball fields to work near the fences and stands. Go for the sniper!

I agree with Dancer. My 10" coil definitely covers more ground than the 8", I use it in crop fields and other very large areas. Depth is just about the same for both coils.
