NEW COIL = 1st SILVER + GOLD

TURNMASTER

Active member
Got out with my new coil and it worked as hoped.
6"HFDD
1937 merc S at 4", and a small gold chain to boot.

Wife says maybe not gold though. It was in the ground about 3" and pretty caked with dirt, but has no visible corrosion, also no clasps. Not brass or copper.
That small coil really cut through the junk, very cool.

That small DD ground balanced out higher than I had hoped, in the 40s for a few feet -- the 5x10 balanced out well but this one seemed to run a higher number. Tracking, when I got into the garbage, pulled that # down considerably, to the high teens, so I got back to a clear spot let it level out in the mid 30's, turned it off and went back to where I had been and pulled my 1st merc.

Congrats on your first Merc.

It sounds like the new coil is going to work out real good for yea.

Hi Jeff,

Congrats on the finds, that little DD coil is a charmer. I wanted to give you some technical feedback on what you are seeing for your GB readings. The lower the GB number the more magnetic the soil is which is usually more difficult ground. The small DD "sees" less ground and will usually GB at a higher number which is good. There is also some variation in the different coils and where the GB numbers settle for each. In very bad conditions the little DD may actually go deeper than larger coils, seems counter-intuitive but I have empirical data that proves that such is the case.

This post, in particular the Saltwater section proved to me that there is something special about this little HF DD coil.

Careful though, that little coil is addictive!

Thanks BB
The little coil that could
I was wondering if it would be the case that this small DD would see so much less soil and contamination that it would excel. At any given depth this coil reads 60% of the volume of the 5x10 HF DD. I didn't do the math but it should see something like 10 to 20% of what the 9" MF CC reads at the same depth. Yes I know the CC sees a smaller diameter as it goes deeper and that changes the equation in a variable fashion. In this case it is a good thing.

I will be going back to that same site next week. My batteries died 20 min after my 1st merc (15 after the gold chain). I think I started to get slightly erratic signals. Maybe I was still giddy though.
Next time I will auto GB and no Tracking in the cleanest spot I know in that corner of the lot.
Also will have a spare set of batteries with me.

I may try to trade my 5x10 for a different DD coil (any bites?). I did find that with the 5x10 HF DD I can pick out some super fine bits of metal and that ain't really what I'm after. Should be good for finding that flour size gold. (here I go making assumptions again)

Time will tell

It's copper, I put it under the microscope at work and you can see pits in the plating at 20x. Oh Well, still got my first silver.
