I just upgraded today from my older Sony DSC-F717 to a new Canon EOS Rebel XT 8mp. Can I expect to take better photos, ie, sharper images, and better color? I see many great photo on this site, but am not always sure of what type of camra was used. Hope I made a good choice.

I've never used either camea but I would expect the new Canon will be much better than anything you have had in the past. The lens you use with your new camera will to a large degree determine the quality of your pictures. Congratulations and looking forward to seeing some pictures from you.

It's a very nice all around camera. My first digital SLR was a Digital Rebel 300D, I still use it as my backup camera. Your Digital rebel 350XT is the next model up after mine and offers enough improvements that I might sell my 300D and buy a 350XT. The good news is that you have a very nice camera now. The bad news is that you can no longer blame your bad photos on your camera. One tip for you is this. Buy quality lenses, Canon's L glass is the best. When I bought my 300D the guy at the camera store sold me a crappy $200 100-300mm zoom lens. The results were so disappointing I almost lost interest in photography all together. Now that I've upgraded my lenses the quality of my shots improved so much that sports photography has actually evolved into a small business for me. Of course I've spent almost 10X the cost of the camera on lens and accessories. But you got a good camera Jim, now get out, take some shots and post them for us.

Below is a link to a great forum to learn about your camera. Also, go this this link to read the review on your camera. Lot's of information in the review.

The Sony is a top of the line fixed lens 5.0 megapixel camera with a very sharp lens. You will have to spend on a Canon lens more than what you spent on the Sony to get comparable 'sharpness'.
Think of the Sony as having a 35mm film format and the Canon, due to the 8mp as having a 2-1/2" film format. You will be able to enlarge the Canon pics more and with less grain.
Canon is noted for its great colors and very smooth and grain free pictures.
The biggest difference? The Canon will ultimately be a more versitile camera due to its interchangable lens, and larger sensor. You can take better pics in lower lighting than with the Sony. The 8mp format will also give you more cropping versatility.
If you weren't getting great photos with the Sony then it probably wasn't the camera.

Thanks guys for your input. I will definitely have to purchase a good telephoto and possibly a macro lense. I may pass my Sony down to my son.
From the photos I have seen here on this site, you guys should be working for the National Geographical Magazine, GREAT PHOTOS !!!
