You are reading it right at this very moment.
If you look back through all the different posts, both active and archived, you will find an incredible amount of information on how to deal with just about any situation.
There are probably a few who print out every post that they find of particular interest and have made up their own notebook for reference !!!!
Soooooo......
On a rainy day when there is nothing on TV, just start reading. How much easier can it get....and for free .

Please forgive me for posting on this thread with something that is not related to the original post. I am only doing this because I can not break through barriers imposed on the Minelab Explorer forum format.
Overnight the Explorer forum was moved to a new location with instructions "click here" to go to the new location. After doing that I can not post, log in or register. There are no procedures given and no help button to help figure things out. If anyone can help me understand what is going on it would sure be appreciated.
TOTALLY FRUSTRATED,
Glenn

Art,
Thanks for your very quick response.
I try to log in and I get a message stating that my user name was not found or is inactive.
* I try to register and I get a message that the name I entered is used by another user.
* I tried to register with another user name and password. I get an error message stating that another user is already using the email address that I submit.
Thanks for your suggestion.

True enough. Its all there for the searching. And, as you stated its all free information.
However...
If you do read every post you can find (and I've read a "ton" of them) you'll find many contradictions. Someone who claims to be an expert with the Sov will outline their ultimate advice... only to be followed with a reply by another Sov user who says the info is not exactly correct. e.g., "I think you meant to say"... or ... "Not in my experience"... etc.
In other words you have to be knowledgeable enough to know which statements are correct... be able to separate the wheat from the shaft. (not necessarily easy to do if you just purchased your very first detector.)
Most post in this forum are written by long term MD's or at least MD's that are already well beyond the basics and know what they are doing. They've been around the block a couple times.
True, we all have to start with the first step... but a book; "How to walk before you can run" manual can be very beneficial to the newbie.
Also... consider the MD'er with dial up internet connections. It could take them an eternity trying to search all the forums for the necessary information. (If they even know how to perform a proper search)
As for me... (enter the lazy factor) I have cable modem and consider to be myself an advanced PC user. I can surf the net, chatrooms, newsgroups (Xnews,Forte Agent, Mozilla, etc) six ways to Sunday. However... if a book has been written on the subject I'm researching... "I'll buy it".
In other words, give me a hardcopy of the consolidated information. Maybe its old school but I like reading books and highlighting the good stuff!
Last, when I have time to kill I enjoy reading the forums and newsgroups (even the flamers can make me laugh) But... when I'm in a hurry, it bugs me when I have to read and sift thru all the petty bickering, spam, and bogus threads, just to get to the good stuff.
I know, I know... I have to learn to take the good with the bad. (But give me a book with nothing but good and I'll take it first

We get so many different hunting situations that there isn't any "correct" answer for anything all the time.
So, what you want? Any one person is going to give you his opinion based on his own experiences under very particular circumstances. A great deal is very subjective.
So how would any particular individual handle any particular set of circumstances with his chosen hunting style and equipment?
None of us will ever agree on what is the best way to do everything. It just ain't gonna happen.
If we all wrote books, how would we choose which one to go by??
Every different set of conditions has the potential of requireing a different approach.
We get into what each individual "normally" does, but then there are the exceptions that constantly pop up.
So who would you want to see write a book, and how hairy would you like it too be??

Good questions...

Per another thread I understand Andy Sabish has been kicking the idea around the idea of writing a book on the Sovereign. Seems he was holding off thinking the Sovereign would be retired, but is now rethinking the idea with the release of the Elite and 2005 GT models.

As far as who would "I" want to write it... there's no arguing Andy comes with some pretty good references ;)

Then again... David at Dixie Metal Detectors has hinted at putting something together.

Or Doc at Profile Prospecting Supply! He knows the Sovereign inside out, he's definitely got the credentials and is more than qualified to write a book on it. (Unfortunately I haven't heard of any rumors to this effect :sad

No argument from me on any of your questions... there all valid. Different hunting situations will definitely yield different results (i.e detector settings)

Then again... if all the permutations and combinations you mentioned would make writing (or selecting which book to purchase impossible... how can we explain the success of such books like Andy's "Mastering the Minelab Explorer or "Mastering the Minelab Quattro".

The Sovereign and Elite have all the knobs and switches of any good detector and setting them for maximum results will depend on your specific terrain. However... set them incorrectly and you won't even find a jar of silver buried one inch under wet sand.

For instance... you can turn the Disc and Notch controls back and forth all day long but their position won't make any difference at all if your Sov is set in "All Metal" mode. :nerd While this type of information may be "DUH!" to some MD'ers... it may make all the difference to someone another. :thumbup

Or this tidbit of info: "When operating in mineralized soil the operator should reduce sensitivity until the ground balance is able to cope" From a newbies perspective... Who or what is the ground balance and how do I know when its coping? Coping with what?

Or the obvious advice to "ignore false signals". Seems like obvious advice unless the Sovereign is your very first detector and all the beeps and boops and wavering tones sounds like something out of the Close Encounters movie. Which signals are the false signals?

Not really looking for (or expecting) answers to these questions, just trying to defend my argument for a "How TO Get the Most Out of Your Sovereign" book. :clap

I guess you would want a book about things that are most generally true. Not the really strange stuff.

I can see that.

The most commonly asked questions and problems that just about everybody would agree on for answers would be good. The freaky stuff would have to be worked out on a case by case basis.

I think you just nailed it as to what a good starter book needs that would not be oriented too much on personal tastes or dependence on specific conditions.

That would work.
